The department Rolling, Finishing & Measurement develops and implements process technology and measurement devices for the down-stream processes for Tata Steel. In total ~50 highly educated researchers work in the department divided in 3 knowledge groups which are based in the Netherlands The disciplines studied by the researchers range from mechanical engineering, physics, chemistry, mathematics and related educations

Since July 2013 responsibilities have expanded to also being the department manager of the department Longs Rolling and Engineering in Tata Steel Research and Development in Rotherham.This department consist of 35 highly qualified researchers. Main working areas in the department: - Long product Rolling in all areas (geometry, surface, temperature, rolls) - Reheating technology - Surface technology (scale, surface defects) - Development of measuring technologyfor usage in the steel process chain with an emphasis on Rolling and Finishing. Technologies like : magnetic, optic, ultrasoon technologies, thermal measurements.In many aspects there are similarities with the work being done in the equivalent department (Strip Rolling and Control) in the Netherlands but the area of application is mostly in long products.The work is mostly done for the production facilities in Scunthorp and other UK based locations with longs product facilities.

Department Manager of Research department :Strip Rolling and Control:Size of the department has varied from ~45 to ~80 persons. Currently the department consists of ~45 highly qualified researchers. Main working areas in the department: - Hot Rolling technology in all areas (geometry, surface, temperature, rolls) - Cold Rolling technology in all area (mill setup, control, lubrication, rolls) - Surface technology (scale, surface defects, pickling, roughness) - Development of measuring technologyfor usage in the steel process chain with an emphasis on Rolling and finishing. Technologies like : magnetic, optic, ultrasoon technologies, thermal measurements.The work is mostly done for the production facilities in IJmuiden (NL), Port Talbot (UK) and Jamshedpur (India)

Group consisted of ~13 persons and was formed from two seperate groups (a group with cold rolling experts and another group with control experts. Merging them was part of the job.Most work was done in the area of continuous improvement of cold rolling and control performance (also in Hot Rolling)

Was involved in the start-up of the Direct Sheet Plant in IJmuiden. Main area of interest : The Hot Strip Finish Mill and Tunnel Furnace part
