Operating under the “publish or perish” maxim, my 25 years in academia provided extensive opportunity to hone my comprehensive writing, editing, and desktop publishing skills. I have authored or co-authored more than 40 journal articles and conference proceedings, 110 technical reports and informational briefs, 5 in-person and web-based training course packages, 50 presentations for domestic and international forums, and 85 proposals resulting in more than $10.4 million in private, local, State, and Federal grants. Working closely with students, I am also highly experienced content and copy editing graduate theses, admissions essays, and transitional résumés. When my interest in writing, editing, and desktop publishing surpassed my technical interests, I knew it was time to leave academia and pursue an encore career assisting a broader audience in effectively meeting their unique communication needs. As Olympic College MESA Program Director, I encouraged student learning and success; offered personalized academic, financial, and career exploration support; and encouraged an ongoing commitment to academic excellence, consistent with the College’s Vision. Outcomes were reflected in improved academic performance, transfer degree completion, and acceptance to four-year institutions by MESA students. Introduced as a National Science Foundation pilot program in June 2011, I was responsible for all aspects of Program development and administration, including establishing internal and external partnerships and leveraging additional resources.

With more than 20 years of research experience, I have gained a national reputation for expertise in the areas of traffic incident management, commercial vehicle safety and operations, and workforce development; with supporting knowledge of traffic management and ITS, traffic safety, and planning and infrastructure management. I have successfully secured, managed, and/or conducted more than $10.2 million in sponsored projects and have extensive experience working with local, State, and Federal agency and private industry sponsors. I have also published more than 135 technical reports, conference proceedings, and refereed technical journal publications; and presented research findings in a variety of domestic and international forums.

While serving as an Assistant and Associate Professor, I successfully conducted and managed various programs of research, education, and outreach. In an instructional capacity, my responsibilities included teaching undergraduate and graduate engineering courses, advising undergraduate and graduate students; recruiting and retaining students, with a focus on under-represented students; actively advising student clubs; and providing continuing education training on demand. In a research capacity, I successfully secured, managed, and/or conducted numerous sponsored grants and have extensive experience working with various sponsoring organizations; meeting the unique outcome, fiscal, and reporting responsibilities associated with each award; and identifying opportunities for leveraged and matching funds. In a service capacity, my responsibilities included serving on committees internal and external to the university; making hiring recommendations; providing technical expertise on community-based committees; and garnering support for institutional initiatives from the community at large.
