As a qualified psychologist, I became disillusioned by Health & Org Psych; & found myself in the world of Technology in the dot.com days.In 2003 my business partner & I founded Symplicit. Following a Design Thinking philosophy, grounded in our psychology & industrial design backgrounds, we grew Symplicit to be one of the largest & best known UX consultancy’s in Australia, & sold in 2015.I have worked in digital Research & Design for the last 25 years (across banking & finance, telecommunications, utilities, retail, directories, Education, Gov., logistics, not-for-profit, & more); locally & internationally.I used to enjoy contributing to industry discussion (e.g., writing about behaviour design and impactful human centred innovation); & speaking at local & international conferences. I’d love to get back to that once again. In 2012 in the midst of all the Symplicit growth chaos, I somehow managed to fit in writing my first book “Killer UX Design"; a hugely rewarding experience that I am still recovering from...! (Buy it here: http://www.sitepoint.com/books/ux1/ ). From Killer UX Design I imagined the iPad app 'Cook', a global social network for creating & sharing recipes. Cook was launched in October 2013, & awarded 'Best of 2013', & ‘Editors Choice' by Apple. Cook is still one of the top rated cooking apps in more than 100 countries worldwide today. In August 2018 I finished up with Symplicit, following the 3 year earn-out. During my time with DWS I was a group Executive Director, & I sat on the Board of Directors for the ASX listed Australian company. What next? I’ve been fortunate in my career to-date, so I’m lucky to be able to focus on things I enjoy now.Non-Executive roles on boards; working with people I like & respect; projects that are fun, interesting & challenging; as well as @theCookapp once again - all rate highly. Wanna do something interesting? Reach out for a chat, I like coffee.

Principal Researcher & Product Owner [Co-Founder]Cook 2012 - PresentCook is an iPad app, that came into existence following creation of a case-study product that formed a hugely important part of my book "Killer UX Design" (by Sitepoint: http://www.sitepoint.com/books/ux1/).Cook offers people a beautiful way to create, store and share recipes with close friends and family - even the world - and was initially created to showcase the value of taking a design thinking / CX/UX approach to designing a product and also for shaping and considering an overall business model.Cook launched for iOS7 in October 2013 and saw 500,000 downloads in it's first 3 weeks of existence; we are now just shy of 1 Million downloads. There are several hundred thousand recipes that have been created within the app through user generated content, with thousands more created globally per day. We are happy to say, based on our figures to-date, user engagement is high. It's been a whole lot of fun so far - and a great (and exhausting...?) experience for the 4 co-founding directors - Alex Johnston, Jeff Tan-Ang, Steve Moule and I; and we are currently looking for funding / investment, so that we can further develop our vision for the business, and continue to grow and engage our global user-base.

Working with some of the most significant brands locally in Australia and Internationally (APAC, Europe and USA), for the last 12 years, Symplicit focuses on what we term Customer Led Innovation, and has delivered projects across a range of areas. These include, understanding behaviour within the built environment (Wayfinding); research and design of a special services uniform and emergency kits (uniform and kit bag design); exploring the customer journey across a range of their products, services and touch-points (Service Design) for many commercial and not-for-profit clients; creating retail experiences that help to better serve customers when they enter the built environment; as well as conducting behavioural research to inform product design for Internet of Things (IoT) services to be released into the Australian market.Working mainly with commercial clients, Symplicit is proud of their Social Innovation and pro-bono work with charities, such as the Salvation Army, Movember and Beyond Blue. Usability Manager (Syd / Melb)Ptg Global 1998 - 2002Sydney, Nsw, AuWorking for PTG Global gave me insight to the world of 'usability'. I was involved and led several of the large government and commercial engagements that PTG had across that time.First experience of having to win and deliver work; meet targets and manage workload all at the same time - as many consultants have to do. Working with a great bunch of people who are now well known in the UX industry (Steve, Oli, James, etc); and that have remained my great friends to this day. Have a lot to thank PTG for when I reflect on it; it was a great experience that has served me well my entire career. -
Organisational Psychology ConsultantInnovative People Solutions 1998 - 2000Innovative People Solutions was an organisational psychology consulting service that provided recruitment, selection, HR and strategic leadership coaching.I was mainly involved in set-up and running of large assessment centres for recruitment and training purposes. Most notable was involvement in running Australia wide assessment centres for the selection of staff to work in the Olympic park and city Branches for Westpac, during the Sydney 2000 Olympics.I gained experience in interviewing, behavioural observation, role-playing and writing competency based role-plays. Most importantly I gained my 'consulting 101' experience working with the great people at IPS. Foundation skills that have served me well my entire career. -
Human Factors Consultant [Human Centred Design]Epredix 1998 - 1999UsMy first encounter with user-interface design issues that led to a new interest area.ePredix was all about psychometric testing and evaluation online, a growing area in the organisational psychology space, and it didn't take much to see that technology and design were possibly negatively impacting the outcomes observed.I continued to work in the organisational psychology space for a short time while I looked for opportunities to further my experience and knowledge of HMI (Human Machine Interface interactions). A new passion was born! -
Intern & Placement PsychologistHunter Area Health Service - Newcastle 1995 - 1997Worked and gained experience across several facilities within the Mental Health Care service offered by Hunter Area Health out of Newcastle NSW, as part of Psychology placement programs in undergraduate years; and also whilst finishing Masters of Applied Psychology, at University of Newcastle. Experience included time consulting across several of the health services in Newcastle, such as Lowrey Lodge (non-medical detoxification unit); Morisset Hospital (non-acute mental health facility); West Newcastle Community Health Care (drug and alcohol services, psychology, home care, so on). This experience was instrumental in changing my view of working in the mental health and drug and alcohol areas of clinical psychology; leading me to focus on organisational psychology instead.
