June 2023, we are 97+% of our way to our $4M philanthropic goal, and have added another $1.5M for Movement City buildout, equipment and capacity building.

In 2015, COMPASS programs merged with two fine organizations that could continue to grow our successful models. Lawrence Community Works acquired our COMPASS Community Collaborative* workforce development program, and Imajine That acquired our professional development education for preschool and afterschool educators programs. * Our COMPASS for homeless families program was launched in 2002 and was at the forefront of efforts to end family homelessness in Massachusetts. Beginning in 2007, COMPASS for homeless families operated the COMPASS Community Collaborative, which is most simply a community-based jobs program for homeless and at risk parents. Through education, skills training and coaching, this program builds the capacities of parents to attain and retain stable employment. Through key employer partnerships, we link program participants directly to jobs. Through relentless support and deep cross-sector community partnerships, we connect participants with the broad resources and supports that homeless families need to navigate toward self-sufficiency and a brighter future. I was able to work strategically with a smart staff and alumni leadership to better knit together alumni relations and fundraising, which had operated relatively independently for a very long time. In addition, we worked to simplify "giving to Wesleyan" so that alumni were not being approached to support multiple funding pools and were able to get behind support of alma mater. In the last year that I Chaired the Wesleyan Fund, we raised 16M dollars, with over 50% alumni participation. I learned a tremendous amount about messaging, marketing, e-marketing, metrics and more - on the fundraising front. I attended many Board meetings over these years, and also had the privilege of learning quite a bit about University operations overall. This was lifelong learning in action. Show less
