When I was 10 years old I started my first company, The Candy Company, a subscription based service of sweet treats delivered literally to your bedroom door. Delivery was made to makeshift mailboxes that consisted of standard off-white mailing envelopes that were scotch taped to each family member’s bedroom door. Naturally at the age of 10, I drew up a contract for all my customers to sign: “The Candy Company: We will send you candy in the mail for a small fine. First we will send you the candy, then we will send you the bill and you will pay. The fines may vary. The price is reasonable. Signed John H Roth, James Roth and John Roth Jr. NO TAKE BACKS.”This was the actual contract that each of my family members (except my mother and sister) signed on a pink piece of paper ripped out of my notebook. Ever since I was little, I have never been afraid to be independent and tackle large projects on my own.
