Working at a systems integration company has broadened my reach beyond open source spatial. Working in collaboration with those on the hardware and infrastructure side of the street really brings home the total coast of ownership goes so far beyond simply the software.

Open Source Development with a focus on OGC software stack

Facet Decision Systems was an amazing company spun off a MDA project (think of an object oriented spreadsheet marketed as a 4th gen language). Much of my professional career can be viewed as trying to recapture the flexibility, power and accessibility of this Cause and Effect product.I started this job fresh out of university as a Java 1.0 Expert; over time I helped migrate the front end of Cause and Effect from Motif to Swing. As such I implemented every last model swing has going; and was able to mourn the loss of several of the layout managers when swing hit version 1.0. When Java3D and geosaptial were combined this decision support tool offered me a bridge into my current geospatial work.
