Co-Chair Outreach Committee For The Michigan Alliance For Innovation On Maternal Health
ACOG is the lead partner in The Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health (AIM) program under the auspices of the Council for Patient Safety in Women’s Health Care. ACOG is a member of the Council. See the AIM section of the Council website for a detailed overview.• Every year, about 25 women in Michigan die from complications related to pregnancy or childbirth. In addition, for every woman who dies in childbirth, 100 more suffer severe life-threatening injury, infection or disease – that’s about 2500 young women/mothers per year• The leading causes of pregnancy-related death are hemorrhage, hypertension-preeclampsia, embolism, amniotic fluid embolism, infection, and an exacerbation of pre-existing chronic conditions. o In the United States, maternal morbidities have increased 50 percent in the past decade and we now rank 64th in the world for maternal mortality – we are one of the very worst of the industrialized countries. o Michigan’s reported maternal mortality is high, with Detroit having three times the nation’s maternal mortality rate African-American women have a death rate that is three to four times that of any other racial group. This may well be the highest disparity ratio of any calculated by public health officials. We are very far from health equity.AIM is a national alliance to promote consistent and safe maternity care to reduce maternal mortality by 1,000 and severe maternal morbidity by 100,000 instances over the course of four years, 2014 – 2018. It is funded through the federal Maternal and Child Health Bureau.Over this four-year period, AIM will collaborate with eight qualified states and a large number of hospitals and hospital systems across the U.S. participating on a voluntary basis to initiate or improve a culture of maternal safety through continuous quality improvement cycles.
