I am the Community Manager for the Ecological Forecasting Initiative (EFI) which is a grassroots community aimed at building and supporting an interdisciplinary community of practice around ecological forecasts. We currently have funding from NSF for a Research Coordination Network to create a community of practice that builds capacity for ecological forecasting by leveraging National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) data products. We also have funding from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to work with partners at Minority Serving Institutions to co-product educational materials related to forecasting and data science that are culturally relevant to historically marginalized groups. My role is to coordinate the EFI members, working group meetings, large workshops, and other strategic initiatives across both the RCN and the larger EFI efforts. In addition to my Community Manager role, I am also the Program Manager for Jason McLachlan's lab at the University of Notre Dame where I help to manage grants and activities within the lab.

Graduate Student In Biological SciencesUniversity Of Notre Dame Jun 2003 - Nov 2010My dissertation research focuses on the ecological interactions and impacts that the invasive rusty crayfish (Orconectes rusticus) has in in-land lakes in northern Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and in the Great Lakes. Specifically, I study how habitat structure, predation, competition, and landscape connectivity with-in lakes and across lake landscapes interact to produce observed patterns in the distribution of rusty crayfish. As a graduate student I have had a significant role in leading and organizing summer field crews of 2-15 people to ensure efficient use of shared resources (human and capital) among multiple projects. This included managing schedules, permits, finances, equipment, and data for several projects. When not in the field I have become adept at using multiple computer programs for data management, analysis, and presentation. I have also learned to work and communicate with people ranging from the angler at a boat ramp to professors and academic colleagues at national meetings. -

Undergraduate ResearchHope College 1999 - 2003As a biology major at Hope College I conducted a wide range of field and laboratory research on the swimmer's itch parasite. In the lab I conducted ecological experiments to assess how temperature affects the swimmer's itch parasite's ability to infect its snail host. I also examined the parasite at the cellular level by preliminarily charaterized acetabular gland contents of the parasite and examining its effect on cultured cells. In the field at Lakes Cadillac and Mitchell I surveyed swimmer's to determine prevalence of swimmer's itch around the through the summer and determined the main duck and snail hosts of the swimmer's itch parasite on the lakes. -
Customer AssistantMurray Lumber & Supply Company 1997 - 2000I had a range of duties at the lumber yard related to customer service and inventory management. My customer services included handling the purchase transactions, loading the lumber and supplies, and when desired delivering the purchases to the job or home site. For inventory management I stocked goods and materials on shelves and bunks of lumber. At this position I became proficient at driving forklifts, running power tools (e.g., swing, table and chop saws, wood planar and sanders, etc.).
