About Joe Barnby

I'm a computational and cognitive scientist with years of experience building and supervising the development of complex generative models for human cognition. My group is interested in explaining the brain basis of social interaction, and developing new tools to treat psychiatric and neurological disorders.I am also the founder of Hypatia. Hypatia is a healthcare venture that makes theory-driven causal and computational models accessible for clinical care, academia, and industry, making natural and artificial intelligence more interpretable.I currently hold an appointment as an Assistant Professor/ Lecturer at Royal Holloway, University of London where I lead the Social Computation and Representation (SoCR) lab, as well as being an adjunct senior research fellow at King’s College London (KCL) and the University of Western Australia (UWA) (https://joebarnby.com/).Previously: computational neuroscientist at the Queensland Brain Institute working with those with Corpus Callosum Dysgenesis to understand the contribution of white matter tracts to social interaction, decision-making, and meta-cognition; Medical Research Council-funded doctoral scientist in cognitive neuroscience and psychopharmacology at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, modelling biological and social experimental data to understand paranoia and psychosis. I have been generously given a few awards and grant funding from The British Association of Psychopharmacology, King's College London, Medical Research Council, Innovate UK, UCL, Horizon 2020, Science Gallery London, and the Wellcome Trust for my work in art, science, and technology.
