About Joe Bartels

I am the CEO and Founder of Phlux Technologies. Phlux is a spin-out from Carnegie Mellon's Robotics Institute that is improving the efficiency and flexibility of industrial robots with its innovative 3D safety platform. By replacing physical barriers around robots with 'digital 3D fences', our solution empowers seamless human-robot collaboration, unlocking valuable floor space, reducing setup times, and enhancing operational efficiency. Before Phlux, I was a grad student in CMU's Field Robotics Center and Illumination and Imaging Lab, where I completed my PhD, advised by Red Whittaker and Srinivas Narasimhan.

    During my graduate studies at CMU and in collaboration with others in the Field Robotics Center and Illumination and Imaging Lab, I developed novel depth imaging systems for use in robotics and automation. These imaging systems include a long-range outdoor depth camera and a fully programmable 3D light curtain device. As a NASA Space Technology Research Fellow, I applied this research to 3D sensing for planetary rovers.

    At UNL's Advanced Surgical Technologies Laboratory I researched and designed robots for minimally invasive surgery, specializing in the mechanical development of robots and their communications and control systems. I designed the electronics and embedded systems for a distributed motor control system and implemented it on miniature surgical robots. I also implemented force feedback on the miniature surgical robots using a force/torque sensor placed at the robot's end effector and a haptic display device.

    At the Jet Propulsion Laboratory I worked in the Robotic Vehicles and Manipulators group. There, I developed a remote seismic transducer system prototype to demonstrate the capability of extraterrestrial subterranean mapping and soil composition identification with the ATHLETE planetary rover. Other work included the design of mechanical parts for the ATHLETE’s counter-rotating auger mechanism using SolidWorks and finite element analysis software.
