Data Team InternLast.Fm Jul 2013 - Sep 2013London, GbDuring a 10 week internship in the Last.fm data team, I worked on a multitude of different projects. Alongside another Cambridge student, I worked independently on a large-scale web-based project, extending the work started during my Group Project (a massively multiplayer online browser-based game based around the buying and selling of virtual artists). Additionally, the data team assigned us several tasks to query and analyse the vast amounts of music- and user-related data collected by Last.fm. Throughout the 10 weeks, we took part in daily standups and end-of-sprint meetings as part of the data team's Scrum-based methodology. We managed our tickets (both externally assigned as well as independently created) through Atlassian's Jira system. Overall, the major languages and technologies we used included: Python (with Flask, and other libraries managed using pip), Thrift, Memcached, PostgreSQL, Deb packaging, Supervisor, Gunicorn, Nginx, Bash scripting, HTML, SCSS (using Compass and Zurb Foundation 4 as a mobile-first base), JS (with jQuery), Grunt (to lint and concat/minify/preprocess our frontend code), Git, as well as Hive and HSQL to run queries on Last.fm's Hadoop cluster. -
Web Development InternYearbook Machine Aug 2012 - Aug 2012London, GbI developed a JavaScript web application using Backbone.js, Raphael.js, jQuery, HTML and LESS, which added functionality to the Yearbook Machine system. I worked mostly independently in a small startup team with guidance from the founder, producing a working webapp at the end of my relatively short time there. Many of the technologies such as Backbone, RequireJS and LESS I began using for the first time and enjoyed experimenting throughout my internship.
