My role as RSPB Conservation Officer involves helping achieve the RSPB's objectives for the Thames Estuary Priority Landscape, with its internationally important numbers of waders, wildfowl and other wildlife. I help to scrutinise and feed into Local Plans and county Local Nature Recovery Strategies in Kent and Essex. I respond to planning applications threatening protected and/or biodiverse sites, and help to scrutinise national infrastructure projects impacting the region. I also liaise with representatives of other eNGOs to help us to respond with one voice to major threats to the larger sites. My role involves helping empower community groups to challenge threats to smaller biodiverse sites that the RSPB and other eNGOs may not have capacity to assist with, as well as helping to support communities looking to help vulnerable species such as Nightingale and Turtle Dove. I respond to public queries on wildlife matters and offer advice where appropriate.

The WildSkills trainees are learning through the incredible knowledge and experience of TCV staff as well as a number of internationally-respected guest speakers and a wide range of experiences and courses.

• Engaged with public groups, presenting information about natural science to inform, educate and enthuse. This included ‘Nature Live’ link from the wildlife garden for around 150 attendees, a presentation at the National Biodiversity Network conference and ‘Science Uncovered’ designing a lichen display and interaction with visitors to inspire interest• Promoted and delivered biodiversity events, ‘Bioblitzes’ bringing together the public and scientists to record species found in different locations. Instructed on data capture methodology and species identification.
