Current responsibilities are the science and technology in fields of resistance welding, projection welding, brazing, soldering and laser welding.

Initiated/drove revision of AIAG (Automotive Industry Action Group) CQI-15 Special Process: Welding System Assessment. Initiated/led global welding technical best welding practice meetings. Collected best practice from all global regions, was given leadership control of the global document (AQ.00238), reorganized the standard and added the best practices learned. Specification was globally approved and released. Drove supply base to adopt digital weld data storage with conditional formatting to drive Red/Yellow/Green response. Driving supply base to adopt macro field view of weld quality. Greatly reduced the number of drawn arc stud issues in our assembly plants by revising AQ.00238 to include drawn arc stud best practices. Created a survey tracking system to ensure best practices were implemented. Pushed supply base to adopt drawn arc stud weld energy and time controls. Resolved long term issue with drawn arc studs on thin gage steels. Leveraged engineering, manufacturing and supply base in large scale weekly meeting to address full aspects of issue. Gained buy in from each group as to their responsibility in resolution. Supply base–improved process controls. Manufacturing-2 stage torque adoption and engineering use of ring stud. Specification Responsible for weld quality and support of the global supply chain. Work with suppliers to make their welding systems robust. Work with suppliers to develop FMEA’s, control plans, process flows and work instructions for manufacturing and quality.

Sr. Management level position (Sr. Professional ) responsible for leading teams of technical specialists (Boots on the Ground Support, Master Black Belts, Dimensional, Stamping Specialists, World Class Manufacturing Specialists and Welding Engineers) that support the resolution of top problem suppliers, provide on going technical support, work with the BICEEP ( Body in White, Interior, Chassis, Electrical, Environmental and Powertrain) Supplier Quality Teams to develop effective processes. Engaged the Supplier Quality teams in fundamental problem solving solutions and participate in launch activities. Lead teams in developing and conducting training in their respective areas.Increased team's project output 2015 vs 2017 79%. Created a cohesive team structure. Instituted weekly cross department communications with reporting that was specific to each BICEEP area and implemented a project tracking system. Reorganized 3 of the teams into BICEEP area specific support to facilitate communication through the fostering of individualized, familiar relationships while floating team members as required to meet support level needs. Teams were reactive in nature, but required my staff to be more proactive through establishing bi-weekly meetings with each manager in their assigned BICEEP area. Established bi-weekly meetings between the Sr. leadership of each BICEEP team to enable plan how best meet the changing needs of the Supplier Quality organization and get continuous feedback as to the effectiveness of my teams.

Lead Chrysler Materials Welding Engineering Group. Hired all current staff, reorganized the department and redirected the purpose of the group to enable a better focus on future development and applied research. AWS 2011-2012 Detroit Executive Committee. Member of Edison Welding Institute Industry Advisory Board (Fall 2009 – Spring 2015). Lead both Fiat and Chrysler Welding Engineering teams in the development and creation of a new cohesive structure for the global organization. Created structured and open communication between the different welding groups within FCA globally. Leading team in defining the global approval process and testing methodologies. Member of the Engineering Industry Advisory Committee (Fall 2014-Spring 2015) at LeTourneau University in Longview, TX.

Corporate welding engineer function. Member of Industry Advisory Board at Edison Welding Institute, Represent Chrysler on committees (American Welding Society, Auto/Steel Partnership and USCAR/USAMP) that direct research on the advancement of the science of materials joining in automotive applications. Current focus is the disimilar welding of Al, Mg and steel in various combinations and with various welding processes. Evaluate and approve materials and processes for welding use within Chrysler. Provide technical direction to Vehicle Engineering, Purchasing, Manufacturing, and our global supply base. Specification owner of all Chrysler welding, brazing, and soldering specifications including process standards, design standards and lab procedures. Evaluate welded designs for manufacturing robustness and process compatibility. Evaluate component failure to determine root cause of failure and provided design, process and material improvement recommendations.

Pier elected chairman of an automotive industry committee (AIAG-composed of welding engineers from all major OEM’s and some tier 1 suppliers) tasked with developing welding process readiness assessment specification. Worked with suppliers to develop FMEA’s, control plans, process flows and work instructions for manufacturing and quality.

Only welding engineer on staff. Supported all design engineering, production, and quality control groups in 16 plants globally. Supplied welding expertise to other Ingersoll-Rand companies. Consolidated and rewrote the Thermo King welding standards for resistance welding and arc welding and then implemented them globally. Helped justify, select and implement robot systems both domestically and internationally. Successfully reduced the linear inches of welds on a truck unit by 42%. Reduced welds on a trailer unit resulting in a cost savings of $100k/year. Developed several methods to control distortion on frames. Worked on project to reduce galling and failure of compressor parts through material selection, nitriding, and applied coating. Developed an internal welding web page. Developed software tools to aid design engineering and quality control. Worked with suppliers to resolve quality issues on purchased assemblies and parts. Analyzed products from competitors for production methods and costing. Have participated in Lean manufacturing activities and FMEA’s. Member of team that consolidated the production of 5 factories into other Thermo King facilities. Have hands on experience welding many of our frames.
