I purchased Chisano Marketing Group in November 2014, and with that purchase came a refreshed philosophy about the marketing communications organization we were going to be and how we were going to work together as a team on behalf of our clients. From the very beginning, the renewed spirit among our staff was refreshing and inspiring at the same time. To be honest, we had no idea what was in store for us as we embarked on this new journey of discovery. In fact, as we pass year seven of our endeavor, it still seems so new, fresh and exciting, and the name change to 78MADISON on January 1, 2016 still draws curiosity. Having had many discussions during the years prior, Tom Chisano and I came to agreement for purchase of the agency. I bought into 40% of the company In January 2014, with plans to purchase the entire agency in November of the same year - which I did.

I was President of Chisano Marketing Group in Orlando, Florida and Dayton, Ohio. For the initial 5 or 6 years, my concentration was in bringing the Orlando office up to par with those we were competing with in Central Florida, Florida and the Southeast. For the remaining years, prior to purchase, I began to relinquish some of my Orlando oversight and concentrate on the Dayton, Ohio office. Prior to my deeper involvement, the Dayton, Ohio office of Chisano Marketing operated more as a printing and fulfillment house rather than a traditional advertising agency. My focus was to maintain our fulfillment and printing services while upgrading our reputation as a full-service marketing communications firm.

Cramer-Krasselt bought my advertising agency - BBC Marketing - in 1995. After the purchase I remained at the agency for a bit over 10 years. For 8 of those years I was the Director of Client Services, overseeing an account team of about 20, and all accounts in the agency. For the remaining two years, I was promoted to General Manager of the Orlando office. C-K was a nationally known firm with offices in Orlando, Milwaukee, Chicago, Phoenix and NY.While at C-K I worked on a number of high profile accounts including Florida Power & Light; Asheville, North Carolina CVB; Advance Auto Parts; Visit Florida; Hyatt Hotels; Disney World Swan/Dolphin Resorts; Orlando, Florida CVB; The Outer Banks of NC; Florida Department of Citrus; and Winn Dixie.

Upon returning home from Dallas (Irving, Texas), I launched a new advertising agency called BBC Marketing which was named the most successful Central Florida business launch in 1990. The challenges were daunting as I was responsible for building the agency from the ground up – from selecting 2 partners to hiring staff that would oversee the creative, media, account service, web and pr disciplines. Profitable all 5 years in business. Bought by Cramer-Krasselt in 1995. At BBC we oversaw a number of high profile clients including Sears Home Improvement, United Telephone Long Distance, Subway Sandwich Shops, Fields BMW and The Children's Wish Foundation.

My first boss and mentor Gene Bartley (Compton Advertising) had become President of Bozell Jacobs. I joined the Bozell team in Dallas, Texas to help launch Pace Pacante Sauce to the East Coast. As well, I was charged with overseeing the teams responsible for Armor Foods Dinner Classics (TV Dinners were huge in the day) and Armor Hot Dogs.

Not long after Saatchi & Saatchi bought Compton Advertising I moved down Madison Avenue to Cunningham & Walsh. They were looking for someone with extensive P&G background (Me) to work on their Coffee Division brands. Here I worked primarily on Folgers Coffee (The Mrs. Olsen days) - both instant and vacuum coffee. As well I worked extensively on two test brands - High Point Coffee and Citrus Hill Orange Juice. Similar to Saatchi & Saatchi buying Compton Advertising, this was the period of BIG agencies gobbling up mid-size agencies, and while at C&W, the agency was bought by NW Ayer. The purchase led me to also work on Nestle business - primarily Nestle's 100,000 Bar.While working on the Folgers business, I worked with a young lad on the P&G side who had just gotten out of the military - A.G. Lafley - who later became CEO of the company.

This is where it all started for me so long ago. 1978. Madison Avenue. The tail end of the Madmen days. Working on Procter & Gamble Business - Tide Laundry Detergent, the granddaddy of them all. Ivory Liquid. Ariel. Pampers. Amazing bosses. Gene Bartley. Dave Warden. Justin Harrington. Phil Voss. Milt Gossett. Bob Jordon. And of course Bart Cummings who put me through school at the University of Illinois via a James Webb Young scholarship. On the P&G side, I got to work with John Smale, and John Pepper who oversaw at different times, the soap division. Later they both became CEO's of P&G. While I did not work on the Brand at Compton, Tylenol (a brand handled by the agency) found themselves in the middle of a crisis when Tylenol capsules laced with potassium cyanide killed seven people in the Chicago area. While incredibly tragic, the event was an amazing PR case study for the agency - how it was all handled - and I got a front seat view as an employee at the agency.
