That’s the vision for Haste co-founders Joe DePinto and Dan Wagner—hear all about the rewards-based games platform they’re building on Bitcoin SV (BSV) on this week’s episode of The Bitcoin Bridge.Joe and Dan were roommates while they were minor league baseball players in the Chicago White Sox recruiting system. But they describe how, from the early days, they were thinking of their post-sports careers and wondering about the businesses they could build.The two founded Barpay, a quick and easy way for people to settle bar/restaurant tabs using a mobile app. Barpay is still going strong today, but the two were looking for something else they could create that took advantage of Bitcoin payments, something Dan became interested in after investing in gold and following the block size debate through the hard forks and eventual restoration of the Bitcoin protocol in 2020.Haste is gearing up to release an SDK for game developers later this year. At the moment there’s an active site with a couple of (very) simple demo games, but in this interview Joe and Dan elaborate on what they’d like to see it become.The platform works by rewarding players whose names appear on its worldwide leaderboard. Players pay small amounts to play, and if you hold your position on the board, you get a percentage share of the total pool in BSV units. As Joe says, that keeps the focus on people acquiring BSV, but you don’t necessarily need to learn everything about Bitcoin to join in. That, they say, will broaden the appeal to people outside the Bitcoin community.

    Micropayment gaming application Play with Haste announced “the world’s first Instant Leaderboard Payout Arcade” which intends to provide a gaming and development platform atop Bitcoin SV. The leaderboard concept, where players that perform well are rewarded via Bitcoin outputs each time one fails to beat their score, took the network by storm in January 2021.With the arcade and HST token distribution, incentives are laid out for developers to build games that implement this concept. The concept could potentially disrupt the entire gaming industry, adding native cash rewards to high scorers along with bragging rights.In a controversial move, a fixed supply fungible token is issued to kickstart growth of this ecosystem. Players of the first two games “Haste” and “Match” are already rewarded based on the distribution schedule so those who participated early have already earned HST.40% of the 200 million HST will be distributed to the gamers—but one does not have to be a gamer to earn, Haste game referrers earn 10% of the game player’s tokens earned in addition to 10% of their BSV spent.This means that no matter one’s role in the space, all can earn in this economy whether you are a gamer, developer, investor, or influencer. A common criticism of BSV is the ‘BUIDL’ meme which suggests that holders of BSV should essentially ‘learn to code’. In their whitepaper, Haste explicitly mentions even those with just ideas can earn royalties.Given sentiment in the space, the question may arise “Why does Haste need a token?” Besides the potential utility of the token (the best of which being ‘Things unthought’) the players of the game along with referrers have a native incentive to shill Haste. The first question begs the second—why does Haste need a marketing department?

    Haste grew from the notion that small, fast payments with miniscule fees could create whole new business models. It’s amazing sometimes that we have to remind ourselves of this simple premise, and notice how far BTC has strayed from this idea in its quest for price pumps.Haste currently offers two very simple speed-based games as a beta demonstration—Haste and Match—which mostly demonstrate how the leaderboard payments system works. In the future, founders Joe DePinto and Dan Wagner and their team plan to expand this into more complex and sophisticated games, inviting developers to create experiences that are fun to play, and can earn players real money.How did you come up with the idea of Haste, and when did you start?The idea for Haste was conceived and built in early January, but you could say that we started thinking about it years ago. It came from Dan Wagner and myself. Dan and I met playing professional baseball in the Chicago White Sox farm system when we were roommates for the 2014 season in Birmingham, AL. Our baseball careers both ended the same year, so we decided to pursue an idea that we had come up with while we were still playing. The idea turned into our first company, Barpay, which is a mobile payment point of sale system for high volume bars and restaurants that we still own and operate full time today.Like most entrepreneurs, just because we were working full time on one project didn’t mean that we didn’t have other ideas we wanted to pursue, and it had long been a vision of ours to do something in Bitcoin, and microtransactions specifically. We had talked about creating a product that pays customers to use it and we thought we were close when we started mapping out a global messaging platform similar to WhatsApp that ran on microtransactions.     So what is Haste? Let’s separate Haste into two parts: the game and the incentive mechanism. The game for Haste is quite simple: react as quickly as possible to the stimulus. After initiating a game, the user waits for an orange circle to appear on their screen in a random position. When they see the orange circle, they press it as fast as they can. The time it takes to press the circle, measured in milliseconds (ms), is their score and the lowest score wins. The most interesting part of Haste is the micropayments-based incentive mechanism, which could be applied to almost any game with a dynamic leaderboard. Each play on Haste costs money (Bitcoin) to initiate with different tiers available depending on the player’s risk tolerance, from less than ½ of a U.S. cent to nearly $200. After each round the payment is distributed to every player who had previously scored on the leaderboard, rewarding the highest ranked player the highest and reducing the payout as the scores move down the leaderboard.Play the “Micro” level which costs $0.19 per round. The game prompts me that the current top score is 275ms and the “in the money” score (100th on the leaderboard) is 454ms. If I react fast enough to place on the leaderboard I will pay my fee to everyone currently on the leaderboard but I will earn future fees from everyone who plays after and fails to beat me.In this example I scored 417ms, enough to place 70th on the leaderboard. Because I failed to take the top spot, my $0.19 is paid out to the players comprising the top 100 spots on the leaderboard as follows: #1 gets 10% (~$0.019)#2-10 get 0.75% (~$0.0014 each)#11-100 get 0.70% (~$0.0013 each)The remaining 20.25% ($0.0385) is split between the Bitcoin miner who processed the transactions (~$0.0005), any referrers who shared a referral link (~$0.019), and Haste (~$0.019).
