Community Development VolunteerPeace Corps Aug 2007 - Nov 2009Taldykorgan, KazakhstanI Served as an Organization and Community Assistance Program (OCAP) Volunteer in Taldykorgan.During my service I worked at two organizations simultaneously; the first “Alpamys” served individuals and families with physical and mental disabilities and assisted them in gaining access to in home services as well as advocating for equal access and support at the local level. I assisted this organization's needs by reaching out to target groups, promoting their mission to relevant stakeholders and planning and hosting fundraising events. The second organization I worked with “Haroat”, served individuals who were undergoing tuberculosis treatments in the Almaty Oblast. The system for treatment in country at the time required the patient to remain in hospital for 3-6 months. Many patients traveled great distances to receive treatment in Taldykorgan. My primary goal was to procure funds to create a lodging house for families of patients who had to travel for treatment to be able to stay near the medical facility at no cost to them. In 2009 with help from several grantors, we were able to open a 10-room dormitory to serve this purpose. At both organizations I was responsible for grant writing, overseeing and reporting on ongoing projects, communicating with international organizations, local government officials, helping staff with their English language, transferring technical skills, etc. -
