Entrepreneur Joe Erwin is the co-founder and former President of national marketing agency Erwin Penland, the co-founder of Clemson University's Erwin Center for Brand Communications, and as President of Erwin Creates, created and opened Endeavor in May 2016. Endeavor is a coworking space for creative independent agencies, freelancers, and corporate marketing teams. Endeavor also offers professional development and networking opportunities. A Clemson graduate, Joe began his career in Greenville but soon moved to New York to join one of the largest marketing agencies of that time. He and his wife Gretchen – also a marketing professional – returned to Greenville in 1986 to open Erwin Penland with one account and two employees, and over the next 30 years grew it to more than 400 people, with offices in Greenville and New York and a client roster that included Verizon Wireless, LLBean, Denny's and DisneyXD. Joe has served on numerous boards and commissions, including the South Carolina Special Olympics, the Governor’s Commission on Teacher Quality, the Partnership for a Drug-Free America, the American Association of Advertising Agencies and the 4A's Foundation. In 2018, Joe became the Chairman and lead owner of the Greenville Triumph professional soccer team – a founding USL League One team – with a mission To Inspire Unity and Create Joy by Serving and Bringing Together the Diverse, International Upstate South Carolina Community. The team made it to the League Championship Match in its inaugural 2019 season, and will play Season Two at its temporary home stadium at Legacy Early College in 2020.Through Erwin Creates, Joe is actively involved with day-to-day activities at Endeavor, provides business consulting services to large and small agencies, and is on the leadership team of Clemson’s Erwin Center for Brand Communications.Reach him at joe.erwin@erwincreates.com.

The Erwins’ gift provides up to five courses to support a new emphasis area in advertising and communication for communication studies majors at Clemson. The courses are also offered as a minor to students in other majors. Many of the classes are taught in collaboration with industry experts. -
