Leidig, Jr., United States Navy (Retired), has been appointed as a Distinguished Fellow of New Westminster College. Vice Admiral Leidig has a distinguished record of ethical leadership, and since August 2013, has served as the Corbin A. McNeill Endowed Chair in Engineering at the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland. He retired from the United States Navy in July 2013, and his final assignment before retirement was as Deputy Commander for Military Operations at U.S. Africa Command from August 2010 to July 2013. In August 2013, Vice Admiral (Ret) Joe Leidig returned to the U.S. Naval Academy as the Class of 1962 Corbin A. McNeill Endowed Chair in Engineering. In addition to teaching in the Mechanical Engineering Department, Joe will mentor midshipmen nuclear–related capstone projects, develop seminars and workshops centered on nuclear energy, and pursue sponsorship for faculty and midshipmen research.

U.S. Africa Command protects and defends the national security interests of the United States by strengthening the defense capabilities of African states and regional organizations and, when directed, conducts military operations, in order to deter and defeat transnational threats and to provide a security environment conductive to good governance and development.During his tour, U.S. Africa Command led U.S. combat operations in Libya and provided combat support and training for French and African military operations in Mali and African military operations in Somalia.
