I got into computers in ancient times because you could "create something from nothing". Pure thought (and typing) turned into things you could use or play with... 50+ years on, I still get a kick seeing a bunch of text become something active and alive on the screen. I was fortunate to spend most of my career making stuff.I would like to be remembered as someone who tried to help. If you used MOE, Sybyl, Spartan or even asked for that mag tape for VAX/VMS I hope you smile if you read this...I had hoped to put a dent in the universe, but I took the safer path. Does one’s personality shape events or the reverse? As a hacker, code is created because it was fun or it was interesting or it was useful (or some combination of all three). I have made stuff that was fun or interesting, but I have to rely on others to determine whether it was useful. And as with all developers, we only see bug reports and complaints. There's no way of knowing whether silence is due to the software being used without problems or gathering (electronic) dust somewhere.…making quantum chemistry programs easier to use since 1984. Almost sounds like a tag line, eh?“I am not coming to the Shire. You must settle its affairs yourselves; that is what you have been trained for. Do you not yet understand? My time is over: it is no longer my task to set things to rights, nor to help folk to do so. And as for you, my dear friends, you will need no help. You are grown up now. Grown indeed very high; among the great you are, and I have no longer any fear at all for any of you.” -- Gandalf making a whole lot of sense...... what a long, strange trip it's been. Whiffs of motor head and Rock & Roll groupie... Feat! I would have made a damned fine session player. Actually, that’s sorta how things turned out. Blame it all on 1-2 teachers and the appearance of a PDP-8/E."Sitting there at the concert, I realized I've probably been as successful in my field as they have been in theirs. People have purchased and (hopefully) enjoyed my creations for decades, and many know my name. Yet nobody has paid to see me work..."Oh, and I've been to 43 states, 5 provinces and 17 countries (so far)... But we lost years to Covid, and I begrudge that. I wanted to be Known. Didn't make it, but hopefully I am known and I'm glad to be Canadian. Things worked out ok.
