Joe Scannell is the CEO & Founder of Layer One Group, a specialized communications and advisory firm with expertise in emerging technology and financial services. With more than a decade of agency experience at Edelman and Prosek Partners, Joe has worked with hundreds of clients across a broad range of sectors and issues.As a senior leader at Prosek and Edelman, Joe specialized in advising clients on strategic communications, including media relations, digital and social media marketing, executive positioning, thought leadership, and reputation management. He also advised executives on communications strategy during special situations, including M&A, IPOs, restructurings, shareholder activism, leadership transitions, and other issue-specific engagements.Some of his clients have included PayPal, Citadel, Invesco, The Carlyle Group, CME Group, Stellar Development Foundation, GSR, and Circle.Joe spent six years as a commissioned officer in the United States Navy Reserve, serving as a Public Affairs Officer (PAO) at the rank of Lieutenant, supporting the Navy’s Public Affairs Headquarters at the Pentagon.He has also spent time working in different industries across the country, including a tech startup in Silicon Valley and in the nonprofit industry at the American Lung Association and the United Service Organization (USO).Joe holds a Master’s degree in Public Relations & Corporate Communications from Georgetown University, a Bachelor’s degree in English from Marquette University and has completed coursework from Harvard Business School’s Executive Education program.
