Post-"Early Retirement" job! I made it 4 months as a stay-at-home dad before passing on a huge materials manager role and accepting a position managing a Topeka auto body and glass shop. Even as I'd never walked into a body shop before, I dove in, created standard work and process maps, and learned the vast complexity of rules and procedures that must be followed as an estimator working with the kaleidoscope of auto insurance companies. In many cases, I perform the work of insurance adjustors as well. In the first six months, I learned how cars and trucks are put together and the sequences and labor times required to make any of hundreds of collision repairs down to the most minute details. This role was not developed for growth prior to my arrival, but since November 2018, revenue and profit has increased. The owner and I hired a glass shop assistant manager and we have tripled the volume of the glass shop while increasing net profitability as well as quality process as measured by customer complaints per 100 jobs completed. Quality checks have been implemented prior to customer delivery on the glass and body shop sides of the business. One struggling associate failed to perform even with coaching and was let go and two excellent body techs replaced him, resulting in a 50% increase in aggregate body shop capacity. A small capital project increased physical body shop space in early 2019. Improved performance on insurance relationship management increased demand for insurance-based collision work. The assumption of estimating and management duties by me allowed the owner to refocus on growth and higher level strategic planning. This is an ongoing project and a very fulfilling family business!
