I am passionate about entrepreneurship and helping start-ups to establish themselves, win investment and ultimately grow into successful businesses through good management of their IP. I am involved with a number of entrepreneurship programmes and accelerators in Cambridge and more widely, as a teacher and mentor, which I enjoy immensely.I help businesses develop and execute their IP strategy. I help them secure relevant protection for their innovations, to manage and minimise IP risk (including “freedom-to-operate”), and advise them when their rights are infringed. I particularly enjoy working with young and growing companies to develop their patent portfolios and relish working closely with inventors to draft new patent applications. My clients include individual inventors, start-ups, university spin-outs, and technology transfer organisations, as well as large multi-nationals, and I understand how to cater for the specific needs of each. I have particular experience advising clients with a business model based on R&D and out-licensing intellectual property rights, and who require a robust approach to enforcing those rights.I am recognised by clients for my ability to quickly grasp new concepts, identify potential inventions and translate those clearly into registered intellectual property rights. With a technical background in physics, I cover a wide range of technical areas including software, digital health, image processing, electronics, optics, semiconductors, mechanical devices, sports equipment, medical devices, engineering and aerospace. I also have an interest in cases with an element of cross-over with the life sciences.I joined J A Kemp in 2011 and became a partner in 2022.I started my career at the London office before joining our Cambridge based team in 2018 to help service our clients in the area.I am a bit of a foodie, I used to be a half decent rugby player, I have two young children and pug, and do anything but finish the bathroom renovation I started two years ago.
