The Marlin Company is a provider of workplace digital signage and content. I originally joined The Marlin Company (now called Marlin) as the Head of Software Engineering to run, manage, and expand the software development team. As well as manage the various vendors and contractors. It quickly became clear that a rift had grown inside the company between the production development, sales, and IT departments. Again I was called upon to rebuild the relationships. I also discovered a large amount of technical debt that had grown unchecked over the years due to lack of maintenance, lack of refactoring, and turnover. I began to build up the teams needed to address this debt and avoid it in the future. In a short time I rose to the position of Manager of Product Development. Software development, Quality assurance, and UX design disciplines all fell under my sphere of responsibility. We went from 2 developers to 8 and 0 QA personnel to 3. I was also acted as the Software Architect and DevOps/IT liaison.We launched a totally new Content Management System and began addressing the technical debt. We also began the transition to an Agile/SCRUM software development methodology.There also was much work to be done on the infrastructure side. I brought in a DBA contractor to begin refactoring the database schema and data analysis. I worked along internal and external IT teams to ensure the operation and security of the Marlin systems.

Sightlines asked me back to "right the ship" with regards to their latest project to revamp their Member Portal website. I was tasked with analyzing the situation with outside vendors and the code, methodologies, and processes used. I also embarked on an internal PR campaign to highlight the accomplishments of the internal software development team as well as reconnect with the Operations department, as they felt left out of the previous design process. At the end of 6 months Sightlines had two finalized and working web applications, amicably ended its relationship with the outside vendor, a much happier Operations department, and a trained/transitioned replacement in the Technical Lead role.

Exulans Corporation was start-up venture born of an idea to provide people with reliable electrical power. Exulans’ primary product, the PowerCenter, is a software controlled smart energy storage device and alternative energy source connection hub. It has uses in residential settings where energy cost savings are import to 3rd world settings where having electricity at all is most important. Its flexible software architecture and modular design make it able to adapt to the situation it is placed in.As VP Engineering and a partner in Exulans I was responsible, in short, for the overall software/hardware architecture, mechanical design, and manufacturing oversight of the PowerCenter. I was also responsible for project management and vendor relationship management.

I was responsible for managing the IT support and software development departments at Sightlines. We supported over 100 users in 6 states and 10 servers in an offsite collocation center. I was also responsible for the software and database architectures for the Sightlines.com member portal web application and the Facilities Renewal Resource Model tools. The director of technology functioned like the CTO and played a key role in various decision-making capacities related to the technology vision and IT management of the organization. I was responsible for ensuring the smooth and effective running of the extended IT infrastructure and allied facilities of the organization. I worked closely with the team and with top management to help IT deliver the expected strategic benefits to the business side of the organization. Over the 5+ years I was there the IT department instituted hardware and software usage policies, increased the bandwidth and reliability of infrastructure systems, implemented Active Directory and Group Policy, completed several internal and client facing software projects, and setup several new offices.

It included an administration system allowing the change of content. Project involved interface design, database design, coding, and testing. Project involved an in-depth analysis and redesign of the Plumtree system. Veteran's Administration Index - A website to organize a large number of documents using Microsoft's Index Server.
