For the past few years, I have been concentrating almost entirely upon systems development at Simmtronic. I have been responsible for the entire life-cycle from initial concept, through design and development to final testing and implementation.My main job has been the development of a series of about 75 Lighting Control Modules, all based on Microchip PIC hardware, for which I have written the firmware in C and assembler. These are critically important products for Simmtronic Ltd, whose business is lighting control systems.I also pioneered the automatic testing of emergency lighting systems using DALI self-contained emergency lighting control gear. This development was in Visual C++ for a platform using Windows XP embedded.I am an active member of TC34C, a technical committee of the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) responsible for the development of the DALI standards for lighting controls.I have developed numerous applications in Visual Basic, not only for commercial use but also for test harnesses, simulators, trace analysers, etc., and also designed and built various small pieces of test equipment for in-house use.In conjunction with all that, I have done research into rates of change of natural light intensity and how best to adjust the rates of change of artificial lighting power so as to optimise energy-saving without distracting the occupants of a building from their work.

Returning to the GST group, I joined Greenstreet as solutions products manager, where I was principally responsible for development of mass-market PC productivity and image processing products with simplified GUI user interfaces, using object-oriented principles and methods. Other duties included assessment of third-party products for rebranding, recruitment, coaching junior personnel, and improving the quality, reliability and adaptability of the company’s products.

I undertook numerous projects including business counselling and marketing research, principally working with small start-up companies including an electronics company. This followed on naturally from my final-term project for the Diploma in Marketing Mangement, "Marketing and the Embryonic Organisation".I also advised several clients on the acquisition of computer systems and did sub-contract management consultancy for various consultancies.After qualifying as an ISO9000 (TickIT) auditor, I provided advice on quality management for software developers.When personal circumstances made it inadvisable to travel, I set up a telephone-based flight-broking service called "Flights by Phone", specialising in the flight-only requirements of business travellers.

I joined GST Computer Systems Ltd as a "member of technical staff", where, after a series of promotions, I ended up as Section Manager of the Embedded Systems Section of GST Professional Services Ltd. I undertook a number of projects, of which the following list is not exhastive:Text processing: competitor analysis and user interface design for a new word processor, outline design for laser phototypesetting system, Chinese typesettingOperating system development: wrote scheduler, memory manager and file manager, also wrote, built and tested ROM-based messaging system (68000 assembler).Natural language project: agreed performance baseline, then ported existing system from FORTRAN to Pascal and set up automatic testing system.Arabic QL and Russian Spectrum: agreed requirements specification, undertook most design work, then supervised junior staff in implementation of prototypes.Kwik-Fit-Euro point of sale system: three-year series of projects …Managed transfer of development system from USA to UK, developed automated testing system, ran various development and enhancement projects, with up to three staff at various times, using ExorMACS cross-development system with Motorola Pascal.Modified target hardware to facilitate in-house downloading.As section manager, supervised project manager and managed all client relations.Graphics development: designed and implemented high-speed graphics library using FORTRAN 77 and 68020 assembler interfaced together for best performance,then supervised other staff doing less technically demanding work for the same client.Scientific Instruments: took over existing project as client manager/project manager, managed all client relations, wrote (in C) mathematical routines which were beyond the ability of junior technical staff. Also wrote (in 68000 assembler) hardware validation software for prototype instruments.Research work: devised a completely new method for DNA fingerprinting.

I designed and implemented communications sub-system in RTL/2 and TI9900 assembler.I also re-wrote the string handling routines for Micrologic's common software libraryand designed a price database cacheing method for point of sale systems.

Warminster

I wrote hyphenation dictionary build program and a database housekeeping program.After that, I was involved in the redesign of the company’s main product, with principal responsibility for the "pre-processor", a rather complex parser.
