Joe Williams is Deputy CEO at the Green Hydrogen Organisation (GH2). GH2 is a Swiss a non-profit foundation which seeks to dramatically accelerate the deployment of green hydrogen across a range of sectors in order to address climate change and improve equitable energy access. GH2 brings together governments, industry, and civil society to enable the rapid uptake of green hydrogen globally for the sectors which need it to meet their climate goals. GH2’s initiatives include the Green Hydrogen Standard.Joe is an experienced campaigner and coalition builder with 18 years’ experience pushing for better policies and governance in the natural resource sector.As advocacy manager at the Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI) until 2021, Joe drove transformational advocacy to help the shape global governance norms and country practices in the oil, gas and mining industries, including leading NRGI’s payment transparency and commodities trading transparency portfolios.Prior to joining NRGI in 2013, Joe coordinated Publish What You Pay’s international advocacy agenda and campaigns to increase transparency in the extractive sector. From 2010 to 2013, Joe led the European campaign for mandatory financial disclosure by oil, gas and mining companies through the EU Accounting and Transparency Directives, which were agreed in 2013 and which have led to the disclosure of over a trillion dollars in taxes and other payments by extractive companies. He was also responsible for communications and information resources for the international PWYP coalition of 1000 members across 50 countries. Joe currently sits on the PWYP Global Council and has many years of experience with the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), including a current seat on the UK EITI multistakeholder group, supporting NRGI’s EITI global board member and through NRGI’s country programming on EITI around the world.Before becoming involved in natural resource governance, Joe worked at the International Crisis Group on its Central Africa Project and then moved to China where he wrote for London-based newspaper Africa-Asia Confidential on relations between China and Africa. Joe’s previous experience included research, project management and advocacy work in Brussels, where he worked for various EU institutions including the European Parliament.
