    In my final year of college, I gained valuable IT and project management experience in a couple of ways:First, I had the privilege of working as an IT liaison/consultant with the Bowdoin College Investments Office/Endowment. In that capacity, I worked with the Sr. VP of Finance and others within the office to implement a document management system for digitizing important paper records via OCR and manual entry. I configured the software to leverage pre-existing workflows within the office. The benefits of the project were manifold:- Minimized physical storage requirements by moving away from storing paper documents to storing electronic versions- Made the documents more accessible and available via computer access- Improved document retention by storing them on network drives that were backed up- Increased efficiency by speeding up the amount of time it took to process certain documentsWhile I could not fully complete the project before graduating from college, I produced a process manual with information about how to use the system and included notes for others to follow in order to improve the system and complete the conversion. I was later happy to learn that another student had subsequently followed the manual to build on my initial work. Second, I had the opportunity to work with the Bowdoin College Webmaster on various tasks, including updating web pages and publishing multimedia content. Altogether, the experiences I gained from working with the Bowdoin College IT department contributed significantly to my desire and, later, decision to formally pursue a career in Information Technology.
