IdeaPros paired me with an entrepreneurial start-up company. zBar is a personal sommelier app that can help you set the stage for a great evening between wine tastings, tequila flights, and cocktail recommendations based on ingredients you have or wish to incorporate. zBar has a partnership with Drizly, where customers can buy the ingredients for the drinks the app suggests.I created a business plan, pitch deck, go-to-market strategy, investor analysis, and financial pro forma. Over the course of my internship, the app was launched, and I provided direct feedback that will be incorporated into future builds. However, at the beginning of 2024, Uber decided to close Drizly, which resulted in a strategy reexamination for zBar.

I began working here as an AmeriCorps Member in 2014, was hired in 2015, and promoted in 2019. I contributed to a team that provides high-quality environmental safeguard programs for Lake Tahoe residents and visitors. Since my AmeriCorps service, I single-handedly developed sustainability projects and annual reports accompanied by presentations to important stakeholders. My positions have taught me to collaborate with diverse teams, manage my time, listen actively, frame complex projects from the ground up, and balance demand with available resources amongst various deadlines.Accomplishments & Responsibilities:- I slashed energy costs by $100,000 after pioneering the development of annual sustainability reporting for Public Works. Between 2016 and 2021, I wrote five reports communicating natural resource consumption, related impacts, and community alliance initiatives in accordance with Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards. The information helped our water and wastewater treatment managers plan activities around peak energy times.- I helped secure a $97,000 grant from the EPA by defusing critical inquiries into agency considerations. The funds enabled our collaborative team of partner agencies to study the impacts of microplastics while cultivating a successful education and outreach campaign via www.drinktahoetap.org- I led the pandemic reopening of the local household hazardous and electronic waste program to accommodate site safety, social distancing, and a new appointment system via ivgidhhw.com, serving 539 customers in 2020 and 708 customers in 2021 with plans to outsource operations by 2023.- I wrote IVGID Board Resolution #1836 on the Environment and Sustainability to justify long-range planning and implementation of projects that benefit local human-built and natural systems. The community's elected five-member Board of Trustees unanimously approved the policy in 2015, paving the way for many of the projects I led during my employment.

I continued the work from my AmeriCorps service by assisting the resource conservation programs in the community where I grew up. Throughout the year our team strived to design citizen science volunteer programs and participate in special events like Earth Day and the Tahoe Summit. We also operated signature programs such as the local household hazardous and electronic waste site in addition to water conservation rebate programs. Accomplishments & Responsibilities:- I spearheaded a 14-day benchmark assessment in 2015 at IVGID-owned Diamond Peak Ski Resort by the Sustainable Tourism and Outdoors Kit for Evaluation (STOKE) against 153 industry criteria. The resort became “STOKE Certified” in 2018 after a reassessment increased the compliance score from 60 to 78 percent garnering recognition from magazines and accolades from local politicians.- I collected weekly water quality samples from local creeks and recreational beaches along with observational and quantitative data. The samples were analyzed in a certified laboratory where bacteria levels, total dissolved solids, and other parameters were determined. Finally, the data was uploaded into an Excel spreadsheet and shared with managers, regulatory agencies, and the public.- I responded to inquiries from local residents who desired to protect wildlife by installing a metal-enclosed garbage container (AKA a bear box). After scheduling a meeting with the client, I would gather information regarding utility locations, public easements, and serviceable right-of-way. Although the task could be completed alone, many homeowners opted to meet in person to discuss the implications.

My foot-in-the-door at IVGID began with my AmeriCorps position. My service year brought me many life lessons, from debt management to the value of sticking with commitments and managing teamwork contributions. I taught environmental lessons to 3,614 students, raised awareness of sustainability practices for 4,634 adults while processing 23 tons of household hazardous waste and 35 tons of electronic waste.Our cohort completed three community service projects:1. We cleaned up litter along the banks of the Truckee River in Reno.2. We created a haunted house full of family-friendly Halloween activities to entertain our community.3. We developed outdoor classrooms and accompanying educational programming entitled “Water, Words, and Wonder” for my alma mater – Incline Elementary School.

My position was headquartered at a 56-acre historic cattle farm named Bartley Ranch nestled in the middle of Reno, Nevada. As a result, my responsibilities were usually independent and outdoors. Our team also patrolled County parks along the Truckee River from Verdi to Sparks, including checks for general tidiness and law enforcement. All sites required regular physical maintenance to preserve historical landmarks while maintaining picnic pavilions, apple orchards, irrigation ditches, wildfire revegetation plots, multi-use trails, and an outdoor amphitheater.I exercised patience with rule benders, vandalism, and juvenile detention crews while strengthening my communication skills with students from the County’s Special Education Program. I appreciated the versatility of daily tasks and found seamless transitions between strolls and fast-paced moments. I enjoyed getting my hands dirty, and I also developed a strong appreciation for anyone who has ever had to clean a public restroom. More importantly, this position gave me a first-hand account of what it means to love working for the benefit of the public good. This enabled me to go above and beyond expectations because I knew I was making a positive impact in my community.

My father ran a small, independently owned financial planning firm in Lake Tahoe throughout my upbringing. He was an Enrolled Agent with the IRS and a Certified Financial Planner (CFP). He specialized in tax returns, small business bookkeeping, and personalized wealth management. I helped my father operate his business ever since I was a kid who walked to his office after school. Eventually, my career in environmental program management took most of my attention, and my father sold his business in the late 2010s. I completed a wide range of tasks while learning about the value of entrepreneurship:- I reconciled accounts in Quickbooks to ensure proper accounting of client records.- I designed the business website using WordPress to capture my father's sense of character alongside his services and expertise.- I motivated my father to write occasional blog posts describing the implications of financial policies, such as changes to the tax code. - I assisted with building maintenance since my father was also the manager of the Lakeside Medical Center in Incline Village, where his office was located.
