Public Safety PIO for Castle Rock Police and Fire. Media relations liaison and social media experimenter. Communication is everything and once I developed this unit, Castle Rock Police and Fire had extremely effective and open dialogue with the community through a dedicated team of PIOs and myself. We were able to learn directly from the citizens in real time when there was a community concern and respond immediately to address the concerns. Additionally, the Department was better equipped to deliver timely and effective communications to the community, leverage social media to assist in the identification and apprehension of individuals suspected of criminal activity and more effectively provide information to the community through relationships established with the local news media. In this position, I was also responsible for providing strategic guidance on both external and internal communications to Department leadership.

Greater Denver Area

After working briefly as a police officer in patrol operations, I was assigned to the Department’s accreditation project. With my diverse law enforcement background, I was able to efficiently obtain proofs of compliance of 214 professional standards all of which had to be verified through written directives, other written documentation, interviews and/or observations. When insufficient proof of compliance was revealed, I was responsible for developing policy, establishing procedures or ensuring appropriate documentation was in place to bring the Department into compliance. Over the course of 12 months, I was able to successfully obtain accreditation status for the Department.

Washington D.C. Metro Area

As the Basic Training Manager, I was tasked with the daily operations of the Department’s Basic Training program. I was responsible to ensure all training objectives were met as mandated by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services. Additionally, I was responsible for ensuring the training curriculum remained updated with new or amended laws and Department policy. I supervised and led nine sworn basic training instructors, a training sergeant, an administrative assistant and a class of approximately 45 recruit police officers. I was responsible for monitoring and evaluating the job performance of the members of my team and making recommendations on promotions and transfers. I also developed, implemented and revised policies and procedures and assisted with the Department’s accreditation management.Once the recruit police officers graduated from the academy, I was responsible for the management and oversight of the Department’s Field Training program. This included review of each probationary officer’s daily performance report and collaborating with the field training officers and their supervisors to maintain high standards in training and ensure proper documentation was achieved for each probationary officer. Through reviewing the performance reports of the probationary officers, I was tasked with making recommendations on retraining when needed and on determining the successful completion of the field training program.

Daily, I relayed critical officer safety and investigative information to my squad. I was responsible for informing personnel of changes in laws and policies, highlighting the implications of new or amended laws and policy. I was responsible for investigating citizen complaints and resolving personnel matters within the organization. In this role, I provided command and control of critical, emergency and high-risk incidents. I was responsible for monitoring and evaluating the job performance of the members of my squad and making recommendations on promotions and transfers. I also prepared work schedules and assign duties to the squad members.

I was responsible for a team of 8 detectives and one administrative assistant. My role was to ensure the proper handling and coordination of the criminal cases assigned to the Major Crimes unit. In this role, I provided guidance and expertise to investigators, ensuring the investigations were conducted in accordance with the law and procedure. I reviewed and approved the content of criminal complaints and search warrant affidavits to ensure adherence to legal requirements. I provided guidance and oversight of the proper collection, preservation, and preparation of evidence as required. I collaborated with civic, educational, and community groups to discuss topics of community concern and determine solutions to enhance the effectiveness of police services. I was responsible for informing personnel of changes in laws and policies, highlighting the implications of new or amended laws and policy. I was responsible for investigating citizen complaints and resolving personnel matters within the unit. In this role, I provided command and control of criminal investigations the Major Crimes Unit responded to. I was responsible for monitoring and evaluating the job performance of the personnel assigned to my unit and making recommendations on promotions and transfers. I also prepared work schedules and assigned cases and other duties to the detectives.

I was assigned to the sniper team where I learned tactical operations as they pertained to entry team operators as well as tactical operations pertaining to being a sniper. After being elevated to team leader, I was tasked with developing a training curriculum to adequately provide training to the team and legal protection to the Department. I was responsible for creating detailed documentation of the training program and maintaining detailed training records of what training was conducted on each training day and the performance results of each sniper. As a result of the newly developed and implemented training curriculum, I was able to increase accountability in meeting training standards. This also better positioned all stakeholders in the event of any issue arising as a result of actions of the sniper team.

I provided forensic expertise and crime scene processing at major crime scenes. This included documentation of the scene, recover and preservation of physical evidence, documentation of postmortem examinations and scene reconstructions and diagraming. I also provided laboratory services in the recovery of latent fingerprints and scientific examination of evidence. I prepared detailed reports and provided expert testimony at major criminal trials.
