I am most proud of a proven ability to succeed in delivering projects where others have failed. I established this pattern very early in my career. In addition to architecting and building solutions, I have identified 3 key aspects that guide me to deliver on challenging projects and projects that had previously failed: 1 A strong understanding of people and knowing that people are most important in achieving success. I lead people to work from their heart, empower people to accomplish what they do best, and align everyone’s work to the final goal. 2 A core belief that overall failure is unacceptable. Unforeseen issues will come up, mistakes will be made, but those must be anticipated and addressed and never used to justify failure. There are infinite reasons to fail, I find the reasons to succeed. 3 Drawing from 18 years of experience gained working in three very different software companies built on top of solid and effective leadership skills learned at an early age working in a family business. As a software development leader I am proud to deliver high quality software products on schedule and within budget through a clear understanding and working knowledge of the Software Development Life Cycle and ability to recognize opportunities and apply multiple disciplines in accomplishing goals.Drawing from experience managing software engineering teams of all sizes and skills in handling team personnel issues, team motivation techniques, and personality conflicts combined with a history of management experience including direct reports, matrix organization, cross-functional teams, remotely located employees, and International teams makes me more effective than traditional technology focused managers.

Director Of Business Response TeamCompasslearning Nov 2006 - PresentAustin, Texas, UsTo address immediate business needs I created the Business Response Team from the ground up to relieve the Product Engineering team who was inundated with requests for one-off services, defect fixes, and custom implementations. Recognizing that these requests prevented Engineering from working on new product development, I decided to find a solution that would allow working on both new product features and address customer demands by:• Creating a separate high performance team of senior software Engineers to address issues critical to business success.• Removing obstacles that interfered with the product development team allowing releases to be delivered on schedule and within budget.• Creating a critical case escalation path prioritized by revenue generation, customer satisfaction, and strategic objectives.• Made possible new revenue opportunities up to $5M.With this SWAT team in place productivity skyrocketed. Not only were the product developers able to deliver on commitments without distractions but the new Business Response Team provided new revenue opportunities, helped close larger deals, and increased overall customer satisfaction. -
Director Of Business Response TeamCompasslearning Nov 2006 - PresentAustin, Texas, UsFaced with accelerated growth beyond expectations and a general belief that our core architecture could not support our customer base without a complete application rewrite, I overcame this challenge and built a solution providing a 20x increase using our existing codebase by:• Collecting factual performance data through extensive software and hardware profiling of all systems, analyzing results, and building a plan to address the most relevant issues.• Optimizing stored procedures and business logic to meet current and future usage requirements. Reducing repetitive calls and eliminating session state inefficiencies.• Re-architecting the underlying network, servers, and storage array.By building on the existing product and code base, I saved the company millions of dollars and provided a solution meeting the needs of a growing customer base. We ultimately increased capacity from 5,000 concurrent users to 70,000 concurrent users with at least 25% overhead for continued growth. -
Director Of Business Response TeamCompasslearning Nov 2006 - PresentAustin, Texas, UsOur legacy product did not include standard interfaces for monitoring performance or other critical data points necessary to understand real-time performance. As we grew this became more of a problem so I built a solution.• Designed an application to monitor the production website with easy to interpret UI showing all critical parameters on a single screen.• Built an application in .NET and deployed to public facing monitors easily visible to all stakeholders.• Added performance counters, gauges, and other critical data points to show real-time performance and usage characteristics.• Included real-time analysis and alert triggers that made issues stand out and send text or emails to stakeholders. This system allowed for predicting failures and more time to fix issues before a problem appeared could be detected by end users and greatly increase product uptime. It also gave greater visibility and understanding of customer usage, hardware load, and areas for optimizations. -
Director Of Business Response TeamCompasslearning Nov 2006 - PresentAustin, Texas, UsWhen our co-location facility suddenly failed to meet their SLA for our cloud-based product, I quickly identified the root cause and took immediate action to permanently correct the problem. This was a business critical project and completely unplanned as our product had been running successfully for a full year without incident at this facility. To build a solution I began:• Analyzing logs and performance data to determine the root cause which I identified as a deficiency in the co-location network; specifically their data bandwidth monitoring was inaccurate and could not scale to meet our demand.• Evaluating the co-location to determine what changed and why they were unable to detect and correct the problem without my assistance. This was isolated to a recent leadership change affecting their technical competency and I decided we had to move.• Selecting a new data center, architecting a new hardware and stack solution, and moving the entire product over a 3 day holiday weekend. These proved to be correct decisions and our cloud-based product has been running successfully and breaking new concurrent usage records with zero downtime for the past 3 years. Customers are happier and the 100% SLA has increased Sales Team and Executive Leadership confidence in our product. -
Director Of Business Response TeamCompasslearning Nov 2006 - PresentAustin, Texas, UsOur corporate network was suffering due to aged equipment and the inability to scale with adding employees, increased server demand, increased storage requirements, and increased bandwidth necessary to move large amounts of data between our office and the Cloud. To solve this problem I:• Consolidated services and negotiated a contract with a new ISP and communications provider increasing bandwidth by 100% to 500Mbps and reducing costs by a true 20%.• Added redundancy to all systems preventing any single point of failure.• Virtualized most server environments decreasing hardware requirements and increasing server management efficiency.• Added Enterprise level NOC monitoring and alerting to identify and address issues. This resulted in a profound increase in network performance and reliability while reducing overall maintenance and service costs. We immediately met the needs of all employees and are now prepared for a growth of 3x. -
Director Of Quality AssuranceCompasslearning Nov 2006 - Mar 2008Austin, Texas, UsProduct quality was poor as a direct result of having a non-functional, poorly selected testing team that were neither experienced or qualified to perform software testing.- Reduced team size from ~40 people to the 10 best testers- Built a new team of qualified software engineering testers- Put in processes for measuring and tracking product quality- Introduce software testing automation- Provided real value to the software engineering team to address product defectsThis improved product quality and overall customer satisfaction. this in turn increased the Sales team confidence and enabled new Sales opportunities. Also helped Tech Support efficiency and reduced complaints. -
