CDI (Center of Device Innovation) was a unique collaboration between JnJ (Johnson and Johnson), and TMC (Texas Medical Center), with the stated goal of accelerating breakthrough medical technology. My role here was to be a steward for good ideas. This involved both leading and supporting efforts to develop and de-risk these ideas from a technological, business, and clinical perspective, so that they could either find a way into the R&D pipeline of one of JnJ's operating companies, or spin out with validated technology and a business plan ready for venture capital investment (go Prana!). During this period, I led and supported projects in the orthopedic (spine), neurovascular (ischemic stroke), general surgery (colorectal, stapling, and hemostasis), infection control (reprocessing/sterilization), and oncological (diagnostics, surgery, and lung cancer) domains.

I developed the following skills during this time:- Voice of Customer Research: Observed over 100+ procedures, and translated clinical requirements into engineering requirements. - Design: CAD/Solidworks, Simulation/Modeling, ASME Y14.5 - GD&T, Tolerance and Stackup Analysis, Design for injection molded components, Design for Manufacturing and Assembly, Fabrication/ Prototyping (3D Printing / Machining / Metalwork). - Project Management - Planned/tracked tasks, scope, schedules/Gantt charts, budget, and resources for cross-functional team. Managed meetings through agendas, minutes, and action items. Requested funds for project expenses and capital equipment, and presented project updates to management. - Documentation - Maintained Design History File, compliant with 21 CFR 820 / ISO 13485 - Design Controls, completed FMEA / Risk Analysis per ISO 14971, Executed Engineering Change Orders / Notices, Provided FDA / ISO Audit and 510(k) application support, - Testing - Completed Verification and Validation Protocols and Reports for Design, Biocompatibility (ISO 10993), Aging, Shipping, and Sterilization Tests. Developed expertise in materials testing using Instron tensile tester, and statistical methods, e.g. A/B hypothesis testing. - Design Transfer - Six Sigma Black Belt and Lean Certifications, Process validation(IQ/OQ/PQ, Gauge R&R Analyses), Preparation of Bill of Materials, and supervision of initial test / production builds, identification, evaluation, and sourcing new suppliers / materials. Field support during limited market release and launch.
