Launched Amazon Studios’ disruptive model for open-door, transparent web-based creative collaboration, with social features, multiple authoring tools and contest-driven script and movie generation. Iterated customer testbed for cinematic stories, including analytics to gain customer insight before investing in production—with 49 optioned projects in development by the end of my tenure. Led three engineering teams, product management, design, content moderation and launch marketing.

Business owner and development manager for teams creating community content and social features on the retail website, with full technology stack for high-scale web services and high-visibility user experiences. Grew key metrics for Customer Discussions from zero to worldwide parity with flagship Customer Reviews. Introduced Agile software practices, improving software deliverable quality, predictability and velocity at the same time. Updated automated content moderation service, and revamped internal moderation support SOP and training.

Principal for the XML Paper Specification (XPS) digital document schema, aligning stakeholders from five orgs across Office and Windows divisions to develop a fixed-placement rendering format used like PDF/PostScript to save and print docs. XPS benefited each team’s customers yet would not have succeeded within any of the orgs alone. Delivered simultaneous improvements in file size, rendering speed and output fidelity. Delivered Windows Presentation Framework (WPF) document APIs (e.g. typography, graphics, rights management, container) and the XPS Document Writer (like print-to-PDF) shipped with Windows and Office. Led four development teams and a team of researchers.

Led two engineering teams to deliver Microsoft Reader releases for PC and PocketPC, with pioneering multi-platform rendering and reading-focused UX. Oversaw the trailblazing ClearType typography unit.

Developed smart adaptive page layout and design features, and a plug-in architecture for book layout engines.

Created dynamic publishing tools for automated page layout, using artificial intelligence to apply encoded document design with variable content. Created the technology roadmap and led external technical evangelism. Ran the core engine platform supporting both business and consumer desktop products, and multi-year, multi-million dollar enterprise co-development deals for webapp and server-based products with Computer Associates and Hewlett Packard. The business desktop product "i publish" was a finalist for PC Magazine’s Technical Excellence award in Software. Design Intelligence was acquired by Microsoft in their Emerging Technologies group.

Released Crystal Walls, a Windows magazine Top 100 product. Scored the coveted Egghead Software “A list” distribution to all stores at launch. Led team of 32 to build a dozen interactive 3D virtual world scenes. Produced the "theme switcher" for Microsoft’s Plus! Pack—the #1 or 2 business app for 6+ months.

Conceived and launched ProKey for Windows, migrating a hit DOS macro utility to the GUI world, resulting in RoseSoft’s highest quarterly revenues ever and its subsequent acquisition by category leader CE Software.

Delivered major software projects in scientific visualization, entertainment and communications. Created and taught courses for Windows International Developers Conferences in San Jose, Boston and Amsterdam.

Developer on Windows 1.0 through initial launches. Created original Windows Control Panel applet. Contributed to the first Windows UI guide.
