Joel earned his BS and MS in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Colorado in Boulder. Following a year of soul-searching, he returned to school to become certified as a high school science teacher. He has been teaching physics, chemistry and engineering for the past 29 years and continues to explore new ways to inspire today’s students and tomorrow’s scientists and engineers. In an ongoing effort to keep current, he has worked with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), the Center for the Advancement of Science In Space (CASIS) and is currently a HUNCH partner with NASA. Each year, as part of the HUNCH program, his engineering students design, prototype and refine solutions to problems that astronauts have identified during their time in space. In early 2017 he returned to Florida to watch the launch of his CASIS project, The Green MacH2ine, as it made its way to the ISS. The experiment was the first to produce photosynthetic hydrogen in space! He continues to work with NASA on the HUNCH project, bringing several teams to Houston each year for the Final Design Review.
