Oversees and manages all aspects of organ donation operations including strategic planning, operational management, regulatory compliance, and quality assurance to ensure the organ donation process is efficient, ethical, and aligned with the organization’s mission.

The Organ Donation Director is responsible and accountable for organ donation related activities focused on the roles and responsibilities of the Donation Coordinators, Organ Recovery Specialists, and Hospital Services Coordinators. This role includes the development, planning, organization, implementation, and direct oversight of these teams. Fosters a collaborative relationship with departments that impact organ and tissue donation, as well as outside constituents such as transplant centers and surgeons. The Organ Donation Director’s focus is improving donor management protocols and processes to optimize organ function and evaluation to increase organs availability for transplant, and improve the allocation and acceptance of organs to transplant centers.

1. Establishes, in conjunction with the Organ Operations Director, goals, objectives, and work plans necessary to maximize donation outcomes.2. Coordinates the development and implementation of clinical training, and monitors the education of the organ donation team.3. Serves as a key contact on recovery matters for clients, including transplant centers, transplant surgeons, the Organ Medical Directors and donor hospitals. 4. Works collaboratively with the Organ Operations Director and Quality Systems to ensure compliance with AOPO, AATB, OPTN, CMS, and other governmental standards and regulations as well as developing and implementing organ donation policies and procedures.5. Participates in meetings, both internally and externally, as appropriate to responsibilities and/or assigned by the Organ Operations Director or Executive Director, i.e. QAPI, AOPO and NATCO meetings, Region 10, etc.6. Works collaboratively with the Organ Operations Director to determine annual departmental budget, strategic plans and process improvement for all areas of responsibility.7. Manages personnel and duties of the organ donation team including, Donation Coordinators, Organ Recovery Specialists, Family Services Coordinators and other positions as assigned.8. Keeps abreast of current industry requirements and best practices while evaluating the application to LifeCenter; as well as representing LifeCenter on national and/or regional initiatives to further the cause of donation.9. Accepts on-call responsibilities as necessary to ensure the call schedule is appropriately covered for departmental operations.10. Shares Administrative Call with the Organ Operations Director or designated individual. Must be available to assist Donation Coordinators, Organ Recovery Specialists and/or Family Services Coordinators during periods of short staffing or excess donor activity. 11. Other duties as assigned by the Organ Operations Director and the Executive Director.

1. Work in conjunction with Organ Operations Director (OOD) and other personnel to maintain and improve upon established policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, and environmental and infection control. 2. Works with the OOD to coordinate monthly Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) clinical data.3. Oversee training of new Donation Coordinator staff in conjunction with other Senior Donation Coordinators if appropriate, as well as oversees on-going training and continuing education of Donation Coordinators, in collaboration with the OOD. 4. When appropriate and designated by OOD, assists the Organ Operations Director in the supervision of the organ staff. 5. Monitors the quality of the team’s work; adjusting training and supervision methods as needed.6. Monitors accuracy of required documentation in Donation Coordinator folders, and oversees the process of ensuring that such folders are available to staff at all times. 7. Oversees donor finance forms and works closely with the Finance Department to ensure accuracy. 8. Actively participates in the role of the Donation Coordinator and follows all assigned duties of that role, including but not limited, to taking call. 9. Acts as a resource for other clinical staff members with questions about the role of Donation Coordinator and/or questions about donor management in complex situations.10. Maintains communication with OOD, Donation Coordinators, Organ Recovery Specialists, Hospital Development, Communication Center, Tissue Recovery personnel and hospital personnel as needed.11. At OOD’s discretion, accepts responsibility for AOC call when Organ Operations Director is unavailable.

1. Works in close collaboration with hospital and other LifeCenter staff to evaluate potential organ donors for suitability. This includes reviewing the patients chart, past medical history, admission history, lab data, hemodynamic status, and family dynamics. 2. Perform on-site evaluation and medical assessment of all potential organ donors. Works with the hospital staff to acquire information to assure suitability of potential donors and advises on the medical management of these potential donors. 3. Coordinates the complex medical management of care on all potential organ donors. This includes maintaining donor’s hemodynamic stability, interpreting lab values and maintaining the viability of all organ systems following established protocols and under the advisement of the Administrator-On-Call (AOC) and /or the Medical Director. 4. Utilizes the LifeCenter Donor Management tool and the Medical Director to ensure the medical management of all potential donors.5. Coordinate all aspects of organ allocation on a local, statewide, regional and national basis using the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS). 6. Coordinate all healthcare personnel participation in organ/tissue donation process. 7. Properly and timely document all donor related activities in the donor chart and electronic chart (I-Transplant) and complete all required data forms according to established policy and procedure. 8. If needed, participate, in the request process to obtain authorization for organ and/or tissue donation from the next of kin.9. Coordinates the import of organs from outside Organ Procurement Organizations (OPO).10. As assigned, collaborate with Hospital Development staff to provide education to hospital staff on donation.11. Perform Organ Recovery Specialist duties as needed12. Perform on-call duties as assigned. 13. Collects and reports data as necessary and as requested.

Functioned as an independent contactor with Buckeye Transplant Services to ensure timely and efficient evaluation of organ offers using transplant center specific evaluation criteria, presentation of all appropriate organ offers to the transplant physician, coordination of transportation for the recovery team and/or organ to and from the donor hospital, on-going motorization of organ suitability and collaborative organ management with OPO coordinator from acceptance until recovery team arrival to donor hospital.

Plan and coordinate in-hospital transplant services, and assist medical staff in organ retrieval for patients undergoing organ transplantation: Communicate with donor families and health team members to ensure comprehensive documentation, including informed consent of potential organ donation. Analyze medical data of potential organ donors from medical and social records, physical examinations, and consults with health team members to perform preliminary physical assessments of donors. Schedule donor laboratory tests to determine histocompatibility of blood or tissue of recipient and donor. Compare collected data to normal values and correlate and summarize laboratory reports, x-rays and other tests to determine medical suitability of potential donors, identify potential complicating factors, and evaluate recipient and donor compatibility. Complete, audit, and maintain donor records and ensure documentation satisfies federal regulations.
