About Joel Cusick
Ever since navigating on Alaska commercial fishing boats in the late 80's, I knew GPS was going to be the next big thing in mapping technologies. Later when I got on land and started using GPS to make maps within Geographic Information Systems, I soon discovered not only did GPS have its limitations but the user did too. One of my first GPS courses I ever taught was using military grade Precision Lightweight GPS (PLGR's). I made a mistake in shifting GPS data and the entire student body used PLGR's to take them to precisely the wrong location - 12 meters away from the obvious true location. That experience taught me to learn as much as possible about coordinate systems, projections, datums, ellipsoids and software to ensure passing data to and from mobile devices and GIS was done right.Today, nearly all of our GIS datasets have GPS involved somewhere in the workflow. I remain passionate about positioning fundamentals.
