About Joel Krautz
Hi there! I'm Joel. I live with my husband Mark and our kelpie-border collie cross Bear in the regional city of Albury Wodonga. I am a Business Analytics Manager, currently leading a team of 8 at Border Express. In my time at Border Express, I have really enjoyed utilising a mix of my finance and operations background to work with stakeholders to deliver insightful Power BI dashboards for use in the wider business. It has been fantastic learning new coding languages, challenging existing logic/processes and creating a shift to using agile methodologies to proactively manage our workflows. Prior to this, I was an Assistant Manager at Johnsons MME, a local accounting firm. Throughout my almost six years there, I honed my skills to be proficient in month and financial year end reporting in order to complete and quality review client’s financial statements, management reports and tax reporting obligations with minimal errors. This role has also further developed my proficiency in written communication, Microsoft Excel and various accounting software programs. I was actively involved in process improvement and mentoring all new employees who joined the organisation. Before that I was an Administration & Customer Service Manager at Target who oversaw the entertainment department in addition to the customer service and administration areas within the store. In this role I learnt many valuable transferrable skills including human resources management, strong verbal communication skills and time management. As for qualifications, I started studying while working at Target with the Certificate IV in Accounting. I then completed the Diploma of Accounting and continued on to university at Deakin University where I achieved a Bachelor of Commerce with Distinction - Accounting and Financial Planning. I then completed the Graduate Diploma of Chartered Accounting and am a full member of CAANZ, having achieved Candidate of the Module for NSW for the Tax unit in 2021 along the way. I have also been a volunteer leader in the Same Sex Attracted, Sex and Gender Diverse (SSASGD) community. Through my volunteer experience I have learnt soft skills such as leadership, interpersonal skills and time management, as well as technical skills such as grant writing and youth mental health first aid.

Engaging with stakeholders to deliver role based reporting, effectively managing their expectations in relation to timelines and quality of deliverables. Surfacing challenges and bottlenecks to address root causes rather than symptoms, identifying opportunities to streamline processes, and ensuring changes are well documented and effectively implemented. Guiding quality control within the department, including two-level reviews, influencing and challenging the level of complexity of client facing reports, and ensuring processes regarding testing and stakeholder engagement are followed. Continuous learning of Power BI, SQL and other coding languages as required to coach 8 employees and consider new ways to solve old problems. Actively challenging the status quo while embedding agile methodologies and gently shifting the team’s mindsets from working reactively to proactively; from “our suggested” to “stakeholder informed” reporting. 1:1s with the team to increase engagement, as well as quarterly objective check ins to keep our agreed objectives front of mind, provide space for long-term career discussions and address any performance issues early. Highlights so far include building the Analytics Objectives Dashboard to monitor team performance and streamline monthly board reporting processes, the shift to Release Planning within Jira and aligning Zoho tickets to be triaged by one resource within the team to reduce interruptions to project teams.

Providing project management support to project teams through evaluating different options for capturing stakeholder feedback and helping scope projects more effectively with the adoption of Jira workflow. Actively challenging the status quo and gently shifting the team’s mindsets from working reactively to proactively.
