I wanted to be a professional jazz musician. I succeeded.At the age of 22, I joined a rock band. I wanted to get signed to a record label, get played on the radio, and tour internationally. I succeeded.At the age of 27, I wanted to get out of debt, save some money, and marry the girl of my dreams. I succeeded.At the age of 30, I wanted to build on my positive experiences in hospitality and take a chance on a career in hotel sales. I’m succeeding.At the age of 35, I wanted to be more present as a father and learn how to address widespread social injustice, and especially the uniquely challenging experiences of Indigenous Peoples in the face of the continuing settler colonial project. I’m still learning, and grateful to my children, my partner, and my mentors and colleagues for their patience and generous insights on this, my learning journey.At the age of 46, I want to continue weaving these strands together, growing stronger in my own convictions by the day, leading through accountable and conscientious action toward boldly envisioned futures. I believe in building compassionate relationships of integrity and accountability. I believe in the most wondrously vibrant “spaces between” where these relationships grow and flourish in spite of imagined boundary zones. The Universe is precisely as it sounds: one song.
