Profile bio

About Joachim Ladwig

ONCE UPON A TIME, I served in the USNavy in a semi-scientific capacity as an end user of the applied physics of sound underwater. I traveled the world chasing submarines from above. Along the way I discovered a deep, personal joy in sharing and learning with others. EVERY DAY, I trained and I practiced my art, eventually becoming well-known for my abilities and for my passion for supporting personnel and mission. I mentored winning teams of acoustics professionals in several tactical units. As I grew in seniority I carried out many collateral duties; academic course curriculum manager, operations & training manager, procedural evaluator, specialized (tactical) educator, fleet liaison, and in the end Commanding Officer’s senior adviser. ONE DAY, I retired and moved home to Indiana to raise my children and goats while attending Indiana University’s School of Ed. I was licensed as an Earth-space sciences educator through an innovative, internship-based, certification program. I became involved in the Science Olympiad and Intel ISEF, International Science and Engineering Fair, programs as well as GENI, the Geography Educators’ Network of Indiana. BECAUSE OF THIS, I’ve spoken as a presenter at several national-level educational conferences and annual GENI events. I've mentored five students to Finalist slots in the ISEF program and coached two MS Science Olympiad teams to State Championships. During these post-graduate years I’ve taught the classic sciences, environmental science and geometry; produced intensive biotechnology and geology courses for upperclassmen; taught IB Biology, AP Biology and Physics to international students in Bahrain and in the UAE; and taught/ lived in an Alaskan bush village. While in the bush I had the opportunity to complete a M.A. in Applied Linguistics. UNTIL FINALLY, with 17 years experience--three internationally and five in a remote, rural Alaskan village--with children from across the globe as mentor, teacher, and Committee Chair I find myself back home again. I earn my living teaching three high school sciences full time and volunteer to teach aerospace education topics to budding aircraft/drone pilots and rocketeers in the Civil Air Patrol each week. Today I am even more prepared for whatever opportunities come my way in the years ahead. Life is good when teaching near the edge...

Secondary Science Education Facilitator

Mountain Village School

Mountain Village, Ak

Beginning my fifth year in the Alaskan bush I am still awestruck at the majesty and mystery of sub-Arctic Alaska. Amazing experiences. I am energetically continuing my work with our delightful (they are delightful), Indigenous secondary school students in all facets of the sciences, computer applications, and journalism as they prepare themselves for higher education and lives beyond the village, or lives of purpose here in the village should they so choose. Networked to produce the “Village Science” curriculum for Fall 2017 I piloted a place-based physical science program showcasing the scientifically grounded wisdom of our Native Yup'ik elders in the pursuit of the traditional subsistence lifestyle. Village Science incorporates elder [Socratic] discourse and hands-on subsistence-centered construction activities with modern scientific theory and practice to link the old ways with the new. The resultant course of study supports a stronger, more value-added science perspective for remote-rural Native students in our 49th state. I am excited to have been asked to lead the way with this program. I am engaged in on-going graduate-level teacher action research working toward completion of a master’s degree in linguistics (MAY19). I am laboring with a cohort of Y-K Delta teachers investigating Literacy for Emerging Bilingual [Yup'ik] learners. My investigative focus is on the intentional, combined use of Indigenous dialect(s) and the technical academic language of science to make meaning through the use of dialogue to produce co-constructed technical summaries in the secondary school environment. The experience of getting to know the people of our village and of the Y-K Delta is invigorating and fulfilling. I am continually excited to join in with my students and elders to practice the cultural ways, and to share more of the science as I go.

Biology And Physics Education Facilitator

Emirates National Schools

Al Ain, Abu Dhabi, Uae

Facilitation of Pre-AP Biology and Physics topics to Emirati students in the UAE focusing on fundamental concept mastery and necessary exploratory skills for future college-level course work. I also taught a medley of interconnected science topics with a few sections of MYP-7 & 8 boys. The focus is on getting out, getting into it, and getting hands-on science experience. I have the distinct pleasure of facilitating the completely student-led ENS Al Ain Eco-Club in their completion of Environmental Agency of Abu Dhabi's Sustainable School Initiative, Green Audit tasks and activity presentations.

Board Member

Geography Educators' Network Of Indiana, Inc. (Geni)

Iupui

Member at Large. Through GENI I've facilitated statewide K-12 geography outreach at the request of Indiana schools. My niche within the GENI organization has been global awareness by way of GIS/GPS education. More specifically, specializing in getting students and teachers out of the classroom and inquisitively into the world around them. Working with the people who make up the GENI BoD, meeting the teachers attending GENI events, and representing GENI at other conferences (HASTI, IGIC, NCGE, etc.) are all excellent educator outreach experiences. The pinnacle experience however is engaging K-12 students with a No Teacher Left Inside gameplan. Teaching a new navigational skill or nurturing an awareness of “a sense of place” on the planet or in the universe at large are incredible opportunities that make a difference to an individual, and drifting lives can be given direction. I enjoy each outreach opportunity immensely. The subtle a-ha! moments when latitude and longitude actually BECOME a place, when a star IS LOCATED by its “celestial address,” or when a person suddenly knows THEY CAN FIND THEIR WAY out of the woods brings a sparkle of self confidence that says “I CAN!” Those are the things that keep me coming back…

Science Educator (Ms/Hs)

Lighthouse Christian Academy

As the lead 7th-12th grade science educator for LCA I found myself in a dream position, sharing ALL of the sciences with ALL of the students, daily! I reinforced the subtle connections and intertwining of one field with another, by example. An opportunity few science teachers have the pleasure to enjoy. Watching the true scientists among the classes shift from being “answer getters” to being “meaning makers” over the years was invigorating. During my tenure a few dedicated kids led the way and we launched the Aerospace Club with our sights on NASA’s TARC competition. We developed a vibrant Science Fair program which drew voluntary participation of 70% of the upper school students. We advanced 62 students to the regional SEF, 14 to the State, and advanced five as Finalists to the Intel ISEF. To see each of these students work-up their projects, take some process coaching, and produce unique, personalized scientific experiences each season was simply amazing. As LCA adopted the Professional Learning Community model I brainstormed with a dedicated team of K-12 math and science professionals. We asked the hard questions, focused on the big ideas, set SMART goals, aligned courses, tailored curricula, evaluated assessment processes and grading practices. Together we optimized student learning interventions with the intent of maximizing student success through quantifiable, authentic learning.

Hr Supervisor

Rbs- Building Materials Distributor

Conducted all benefit, payroll & employee lifecycle duties in support of 60 employees. Facilitated Teamster relations for RBS. The job was a full-time experience with many opportunities for collateral expansion during my tenure. My most fulfilling assignments came through the sharing of information gleaned from OSHA-based Industrial Safety assessment courses. This education contributed to a reduction of OTJ injuries and improved lumber yard conditions/ practices which further minimized industrial liability exposure. During my tenure lumberyard injuries reduced by 5%. It was great to conduct some employee education while enforcing compliance with OSHA standards. Working this job was an adventure almost every day. The opportunity to reach out to persons both in terms of personal employee benefit and professional job safety needs made for a great mix of duties.

As an integral member of specific assessment teams I advised senior staff on tactics and procedures, conducted prototype equipment testing and assessed the readiness of tactical squadrons prior to their deployment abroad. As Squadron Operations Chief and CO's Senior Adviser I was jointly responsible for thousands of properly executed missions and aircrew safety at the highest level over six years of overseas duty. Accumulating 5000 mission hours and literally circling the globe twice, I visited at least 26 countries & nations. Along the way I've learned to speak small amounts of many languages poorly (~;]... To me Anchors Aweigh is more than just a song and The Star Spangled Banner is more than the start of a ball game... they are a part of me.
