For a decade I taught a graduate course in grassroots and word-of-mouth communications. Our program is a three-time winner of the PR Education Program of the Year award given annually by PRWeek. My course examined the objectives, strategies, and tactics of successful political campaigns and how those best practices can be applied by businesses and nonprofit causes to achieve their marketing and communications goals.

Founded a public relations and government relations agency with more than $1.25 million in client billings. Notable engagements include:• Epilepsy Foundation - Developed and implemented an integrated communications plan resulting in greater online and offline engagement with key stakeholders• National Geographic Society – Led a strategic planning initiative and developed a multi- million dollar corporate sponsorship and foundation fundraising plan.• Amputee Coalition – Developed and implemented campaign that generated earned media coverage, created corporate partnerships and distributed 750,000 educational materials.• Alliance for Aging Research – Created and implemented a communications plan that led to media coverage and awareness among targeted audiences.• Huntington’s Disease Society – Developed and implemented a campaign that recruited and mobilized 20,000 volunteers in support of the organization’s policy goals.• National Patient Advocate Foundation - Identified and recruited network of elite volunteers for engagement in organization's public policy initiatives.Other clients include: Alzheimer’s Association, National Multiple Sclerosis Society, National Health Council, Lung Cancer Alliance, COPD Foundation and more.

Served as the Vice President of Strategic Communications for a trade association focused on vision health and eyewear. While at VCA we reached millions through our "Check Yearly. See Clearly." education campaign and thousands of print and broadcast media placements. We also created a government relations program that helped enact several state laws and generated more than 200 cosponsors of legislation in Congress.

As National Director of Advocacy I was responsible for recruiting and mobilizing diabetes advocates in support of our political goals. During my tenure at ADA we recruited more than 100,000 advocates, enacted historic improvements in Medicare coverage for diabetes supplies and education, enacted 40 state laws to improve insurance coverage, increased funding for diabetes research and ended policies that discriminated against people with diabetes. It was the best job I ever had.
