As Executive Director, Joel was responsible for building a strong pro bono marketplace regionally. Joel led many of Taproot’s efforts to engage business professionals, nonprofits and corporations in high quality, impactful pro bono engagements. • Directed the delivery of 500,000 hours of high quality pro bono capacity building consulting grants by 5,000 business volunteers to more than 900 west coast nonprofits, an effort valued at nearly $50M.• Partnered closely with over 100 leading foundations and corporations and secured $12.5M in grants and contracts to design and deliver customized programs that strengthened nonprofits.• During founder transition, served as co-CEO & CFO; led annual budget process, achieved clean audits, and delivered surplus fiscal performance.• Led research and design for innovative national leadership development model to deliver cost effective blended online learning to all US-based nonprofits, with American Express Foundation and Annie E. Casey Foundation support.

Developed and managed towards scale and impact goals introducing new field of corporate employee engagement and social sector capacity building in communities across the western United States.• Built and led all staff, grants, programs, funding and budgets for three offices in Seattle, Los Angeles and San Francisco.• More than doubled (210%) annual grants program delivery from 88 clients to 184 clients with high quality results and post project evaluations.• Developed strategy, secured anchor support and successfully launched Taproot’s Los Angeles expansion in 2008. At start of tenure, led agency from $700k debt to debt free status for the first time in 25 years• Managed and expanded agency budget by 73% with balanced performance• Prepared and negotiated successful and smooth incorporation spin-off from parent corporation• Wrote numerous successful large grant applications• Led and negotiated highly successful, smooth separate incorporation from parent organization.• Set strategy, secured funding to scale the Bay Area Jewish Music Festival to become largest in US.
