About Joel Carpenter

When I was nineteen, I was fortunate enough to land a job as a QA tester working on the Xbox Live Arcade team. I’d had other jobs before, but this was the first job that I really felt a connection to the work I was doing. I continued to work in QA for another three years before I realized that something was missing. I was still young, and I had so many questions about who I was and whether or not this was really what I wanted to do with my life. So I packed up, moved across the country, and changed careers. For the next ten years I traveled and worked in half a dozen different industries, each time trying to push myself out of my comfort zone a little more. I traveled to New Zealand, worked in non-profit, pushed myself into leadership and public speaking roles because it was something I was uncomfortable with and I wanted to be better. It was an incredible period of growth for me. But after a while, I realized that I missed having that connection to my work, I missed the satisfaction I felt working in the tech industry. So I pivoted again and began my career as a software engineer. Now I couldn’t be happier. Technology has always been a part of my life, and I’m finally able to start turning the ideas that have spun around in my head into a reality. I’m a full-stack developer and have had a great time working on both the front and back end of apps. Right now I’m particularly interested in experimenting with technologies that allow us to interact with software in new ways.If you have a project you think I’d be interested in, even if you’d just like to chat about it, please reach out! I’m always happy to connect with new people.

  • Up Next
    Full Stack Developer
    Up Next Dec 2020 - Jan 2021
    I designed and built Up Next, a server-less web app that helps manage public speaking events by providing a simple, easy method to manage speakers and determine a random speaking order.- I built a server-less back end via AWS Amplify, Lambda, and API Gateway which allowed me to keep operating costs during low activity at a minimum while still ensuring scalability for high performance during peak usage.- I designed a session based data persistence model by generating a random session ID which persists for 48 hours after it was last accessed. This allowed me to provide users with the ability to set up their session in advance while ensuring that our database never retains unnecessary information, further lowering operating costs.- I utilized React to build the front end, which provides excellent modularity and code readability, ensuring that maintaining the app is a simple, low cost process.For more information on Up Next and the process I used to design and build it, please check out the repo which I've linked!

  • Fat Cat
    Fat Cat
    Fat Cat Sep 2020 - Sep 2020
    Fat Cat is the Alexa skill for fact checking your fat cat. Think your room mate fed your cat this morning, but your cat's acting like it hasn't eaten in a week? Fat Cat can help get to the bottom of it.Initially built as part of a 3 day coding challenge, Fat Cat was designed to help users keep track of every day pet activities like feeding and medicating your pets. By using simple, intuitive voice commands Fat Cat will keep track of and report on your pet activities. Want to know if your cat was fed this morning? Just ask! Fat Cat knows all.Fat Cat was built utilizing the Alexa Developer Console and Alexa Skills Kit to quickly design an interaction model and deploy the back end code via AWS Lambda and AWS S3 for data persistence. I also utilized SSML to modulate and tune Alexa's responses for a more natural speech pattern.Fat Cat currently supports logging when pets have been fed, and querying about feeding history. However, that's only the start! Fat Cat is still under development with plans to add a much wider range of pet activities and improvements to the interaction model. Fat Cat is my current passion project, so I hope you'll check in from time to time to see what's new!
  • Threeb&&B
    Threeb&&B
    Threeb&&B Aug 2020 - Sep 2020
    ThreeB&&B (pronounced Three B and B) is an open source room reservation app with service oriented architecture.While working on this project, I was responsible for building a prototype back end for the legacy reviews service with the goal of optimizing our data persistence and improving the service's ability to handle spikes in traffic without interrupting continuity of service.As part of this process, I investigated and benchmarked alternative databases before opting to replace the existing database with Postgres, which was demonstrating more than a 200% increase in read times than the alternative. I also optimized the server code and ran benchmarks on the service using K6 to help determine progress and potential bottlenecks throughout the optimization process.Once local optimizations were complete, I deployed the service via AWS EC2 and implemented horizontal scaling, resulting in a new back end that was capable of handling 2000 requests per second with less than a 2s response time and <1% error rate. Overall that was more than a 300% increase, resulting in a back end that was significantly better prepared to ensure an uninterrupted user experience even as unexpected spikes in traffic occur.
  • Halvsy
    Halvsy
    Halvsy Jul 2020 - Aug 2020
    Halvsy is an open source service oriented craft marketplace app. I was responsible for building a dynamic gallery component, where I used React Hooks to ensure optimal code readability and forward compatibility. I also implemented continuous integration via CircleCI and used Jest and Enzyme to ensure >80% test coverage during development. Once the component was constructed, I used Lighthouse to get initial performance benchmarks and then implemented compression and server-side caching to improve largest contentful paint times by 300%.I also utilized Docker to containerize the gallery service which allowed us to deploy via AWS ECS with a single command. It also allowed me to demo the service without needing to worry about compatibility or set up issues, which was a huge bonus!
