A primary goal for the SPA (Strategic Planning) is to outline and implement a work program for successful implementation of the General Plan 2025 Update. This position manages a team of planners that are responsible for high-profile strategic planning initiatives, including Transit-Oriented Community plan development and implementation, the Rio Reimagined PHX project, and other cross-disciplinary projects involving land use, zoning and infrastructure relationships in unique and diverse context.This SPA will represent the PDD in developing and implementing various land use documents, plans, and publications. The position will be expected to manage complex planning projects, programs, and working groups; that require the ability to make sound, independent decisions necessary to execute specific actions around land use plans and policy, while keeping management updated and informed.

Planners I apply specialized knowledge and socioeconomic data to the planning studies and programs of the community. Incumbents work with the public in applying planning and zoning information to private project and land use plans. They may also assist with hearings and commission meetings, as well as review site plans and/or specialized wireless applications, and participate in special projects as needed. Work programs and objectives are developed by the supervisor, but Planners I must exercise initiative and judgment in carrying out these programs. Work is reviewed for appropriate results by their direct supervisor, typically a more senior level Planner.
