Dahlonega, Georgia
As Director of an award-winning downtown development authority and main street program, I was responsible for creating and implementing economic development plans based on the preservation of Dahlonega’s famously historic commercial district. Dahlonega's Main Street program aims to build and sustain a climate of success for downtown businesses, attract positive investment, and keep the community prosperous while supporting the preservation of our historic architecture.
North Georgia
Representing the State Main Street Program, I provided support for 30 designated and prospective Main Street Cities throughout North Georgia. The goal of our work was to facilitate community and economic development based on historic preservation for the revitalization and management of historic central business districts. I advised Main Streets on available project financing through agency loans and grants, and helped build their organizations' effectiveness through development of a mission driven work plan. Some of my major accomplishments were assisting 16 cities with creation of work plans for their Main Street programs, assisting four cities in achieving Main Street designation, and assisting two cities in reviving their failing Main Street programs.
Athens, Georgia
I managed the programs, facilities, personnel and activities of the Leisure Services Department’s Arts Division, including budget, construction and maintenance, public relations, grants, education programs, festivals, exhibitions, and all public services. Our annual budget was $600,000 and we had a full time staff of 11 arts program professionals. My major accomplishments included merging city and county arts programs and staff during government consolidation. I also supervised the restoration and expansion of two historic facilities – the Morton Theatre and the Lyndon House Arts Center. I also led the establishment of two successful community festivals – the Athens Jazz Festival and the North Georgia Folk Festival.
