Founded in 1974, The Oakland Strokes have a deep legacy of creating champions on and off the water. With over 21 National championships, they are one of the elite rowing clubs in the country. While their success on the water is truly remarkable, that is not why I am joining. Because of their success off the water, impacting the lives of the youth who row, I am excited to join the Board of Directors. When people hear about the Oakland Strokes and youth rowing, they often say, oh, that’s great for getting into college. While that is a benefit, it does not begin to get at the heart of the value of rowing and the Oakland Strokes. First off, rowing is fun. It’s really fun :) It is one of the greatest feelings in the world to work together in unison with a group of people as you glide over the water. The sounds, rhythm, and release of endorphins as you row is one of the most incredible experiences. But the real value lies in how the hard work of the sport teaches you to believe in yourself even when your mind tells you it is impossible. It is the lessons around putting in the hard work even when you don’t want to because you know working together as a team to accomplish what you thought was impossible is what being a champion on and off the water is all about. The commitment and track record of the Oakland Strokes to develop Champions on and off the water makes them a truly great organization.The Oakland Strokes have a deep focus on Oakland’s youth through their Stem to Stern junior high program. They are focused on exposing more youth to rowing and helping everyone who wants to do just that.
