I have deep experience in software, business, and finance, and want to help people use business to make the world a better place. I love working with complex problems, human cognition and motivation, and leadership and process challenges. I grew up Japanese-American Amish-Mennonite in rural Kansas and helped build a business in the megacity of Dhaka.I want to help people build strong, good businesses. When everything is overwhelming, I want to help you find a clear path to calm, confident next actions toward real success.As a teen, I meant to become independently wealthy. I read Peter Drucker on management. Warren Buffett on investing and analysis. Charlie Munger on thinking well and practically. But it’s hard to do good business in a broken society. You can’t be truly wealthy while jealously guarding your wealth.In the decades since my first dreams of wealth, I’ve gained a deep conviction that for all our good, it’s important to build businesses that succeed as part of their broader communities. I passionately want “good businesses” to succeed. I want them to sustain owners and their families well. I want them to be points of “belonging” for employees, along with income and a way to invest meaningfully in the world. And I want them to make their communities better-off. And I want the people that build these businesses to have the margin to sleep at night.A few tidbits about me:* I read--a lot. I love learning about ideas, and other people's worlds. And especially about ways that people and organizations can work well and thrive.* I love breaking down complex problems into their pieces, making novel connections, and putting them together.* I grew up in rural Kansas, and spent 7 years helping build a software business in Dhaka.* I'm a homeschooled kid who programmed for fun and worked my way through college in software.* I love the Kansas Leadership Center's framework (derived from Heifetz and Linsky) around adaptive leadership--making progress around the messy issues that no one wants to work with. I've completed their Leadership Path, and--though I am not currently credentialed--am working through their ICF Level 1-accredited Leadership Coach program.* I hold the Chartered Financial Analyst designation from the CFA Institute.* I have an MBA from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.* I'm certified as a Business Made Simple coach, and love the simple, practical efficacy of the frameworks--while beating the drum that no. framework. is. gospel.
