This course demonstrated how a liberal arts approach can help us better understand why racial health disparities began and why they persist into modern times. Through plenary lectures and small group discussions, we investigated how we, as educated citizens and community leaders, ought to interpret the data surrounding shorter life expectancies for people of color. We learned about the science of pollution and the sociology of where contaminated air, land, and water proliferate. Examining these issues, and others, through the lens of liberal arts and sciences helps place these pressing issues within broader social, economic, historical, and cultural contexts. Using people management, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and relationship-building skills, I maintained a positive, accepting, and educating atmosphere that allowed for mistakes and correction, without shame and embarrassment.
