Everything that I have done in my professional life, and much in my personal life, has been centered around creating community. Or in digital speak, Engagement. Two non-profits that I helped start, Bay Area Arts & Music Organization (BAAMO in 2002) and Keep St. Petersburg Local (KPSL in 2010) promote the local and independent, and I served on the board, including as president, of Live Arts Peninsula, which created theater about St. Petersburg.Right next to community is communication. Connecting digitally and in person can create community. It all goes together. Improving communication is an equal passion. The stories we tell are structures to our worlds. I opened and ran a popular cafe in St. Pete - The Globe Coffee Lounge. We were much more than a coffee shop. We were an anchor to a growing creative community.We all need a sense of home, a sense of belonging. When we feel anchored, then we can trust experimentation. Throughout my life I've tried to balance risk and security. A sense of security can give room be daring: the daring leads to a new normal, and the cycle continues.It is pretty easy to create content, and it is something that I do 20 times a day. Creating context for stakeholders is more difficult and more vital for any organization. The world we live in has less boundaries than it used to. We have to learn to navigate this big place well, and help others to do it too. Community and Communication.
