About Joel Kent
I always wanted to serve in the military because I wanted to be part of an organization bigger than myself and to give back to the country in which I was fortunate enough to be born. I enlisted in the navy nuclear propulsion program and spent the next several years learning electronics and reactor technology, chemistry and physics. I learned to enjoy intellectual challenges, especially working with my classmates to master the curriculum.I served in the fleet as an electronics technician, shop supervisor, combat systems officer-of-the watch and fitness leader. I learned first that work ethic brings more “to the fight” than credentials, then the universal truth that people cannot care about how much you know until they know how much you care! My chain of command and peers challenged me to become a better leader by their collective example.Naval aviators are taught from the first day of preflight indoctrination to be relentlessly self-critical; I learned to be fair in my critiques, to set realistic goals and to identify key performance metrics. During my tour as a flight instructor, I endeavored to provide “error-free” training. That expression does not mean mistake-free, either on my part or on the part of my students; every lesson is an opportunity to teach, to learn and to mutually grow as professionals.I spent my final three years in the navy flying the C-130 Hercules and leading diverse teams of operations and maintenance professionals based in Japan, Bahrain and Sicily flying logistics missions in support of forward-deployed naval forces.I’m interested in developing my systems engineering and project/program management skills, learning data science and agile team methodologies, applying my risk management leadership background from the military to the private sector, and investigating commercial opportunities working with small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS).“Watch your thoughts, they become your words; watch your words, they become your actions; watch your actions, they become your habits; watch your habits, they become your character; watch your character, it becomes your destiny.”― Lao Tzu"Aviation in itself is not inherently dangerous. But to an even greater degree than the sea, it is terribly unforgiving of any carelessness, incapacity or neglect."— Captain A. G.
