The AEREO Consortium's mission is to improve the effectiveness of Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) and Human Research Protection Programs (HRPPs) in fulfilling their purpose of appropriately protecting the rights and welfare of research participants and achieving other ethical goals.

The Human Research Protection Club is hosted by SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University. Oversee the university IRB's operations, policies, and review of human subjects research.

Interpret and apply ethical principles applicable to human biomedical research, and serve as a resource for Institutional Review Board (IRB) reviewers and researchers in ethics related matters.Provide secretariat support to the IRB: - Facilitate the review process of research protocols submitted to the IRB (with focus on Continuing Reviews, Non Compliances, and UPIRTSOs)- Documentation of minutes of IRB meetings- Conduct follow up action including correspondence to Investigators / Sponsors / Regulatory Authorities. Ensure that submitted research protocols are reviewed efficiently, and are consistent with the local regulations, guidelines and policies. Involved in the review of studies for the following medical specialties:- Infectious Disease- Rheumatology, Allergy and Immunology- Dermatology

• Conduct the ethical review of human subjects research (in Social Sciences - e.g. Psychology, Sociology, and Political Science) ensuring that research participants’ safety, rights, & welfare are protected• Hold consultations for faculty, researchers, and students to provide advice and direction to facilitate the ethical conduct and approval of their study(s); especially for research that fall within the grey intersection of Human Biomedical Research (as defined by the Human Biomedical Research Act) and Social, Behavioral, and Educational Research • Ensure existing policies, processes, and documents are updated to be aligned and in compliance with local & overseas laws/regulations• Establish networks with other IRBs’ point of contacts, and engage with relevant government agencies to ensure SMU research is in compliance with local laws - e.g. Human Biomedical Research Act (HBRA), Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA)

• Provide research & administrative support for the Bioethics Advisory Committee (BAC) and National Medical Ethics Committee (NMEC)• Keep abreast of the latest scientific & technological advancements in human biomedical research, and identify & discuss any arising ethical issues• Carry out Singapore’s work in the UNESCO Bioethics Programme and maintain continuing relationships with other national bioethics bodies

Training/Education resource for IRB members/reviewers in the IRB's operational framework, SOPs, guidelines and policies.Experienced in the review of studies for the following medical specialties:- Obstetrics & Gynecology - Anesthesia- Surgery (Orthopedics, General Surgery)- Dentistry- Allied Health (Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Audiology)- Nursing- Sport and Rehabilitation Medicine (Devices, Programs)
