During my internship I created a 3D U-net architecture from scratch with focussed attention to segment a brain tumor and classify 4 regions inside the High Grade Glioma's. The architecture uses less parameters, trains faster, but results in comparable classification performances compared to state-of-the-art methods on BraTS 2015 data. (Results Dice score (average of a testset of 24 subjects): Whole tumor: 0.89, Enhancement Tumor: 0.84 and Tumor core: 0.80). Furthermore, it performed very well on new unseen pre-operative clinical datasets. Improvements can be made, but a large step towards a new product was made. (Supervisor Nuno Barros, Software: Python)It gave me as a person a lot of experience in the area of Deep Learning, especially on the brain. Different architectures were investigated, like 3D U-nets, Variational Auto-encoders, Cascaded Networks and more. It was a lovely multidisciplinary company with extra-ordinary smart people, willingly to improve healthcare.
