I am currently in my 14th year of full-time music teaching at the community college level. I have conducted wind ensembles and symphony orchestra, directed jazz big bands and chamber ensembles, and have taught regular and large group lecture courses in Music Appreciation, Music Fundamentals, and first semester Music Theory and Musicianship. I am a percussionist and a specialist in Caribbean steel drums. I am one of fewer than 150 people in the US who build/tune the instruments and possibly the only college professor in the country who builds the instruments, arranges the music, and directs the ensemble. My teaching career has involved building up programs and working with students who sometimes have barriers to success. My program completers have successfully transferred to reputable music programs including the University of North Texas, Berklee, USC, Arizona State University, Boston Conservatory, McGill Conservatory, Sonoma State University, Texas Christian University, and many more.

Music Faculty - Visiting ScholarNorth Lake College Aug 2013 - May 2015Irving, TxI relocated back to DFW in summer of 2013. I am currently teaching Music Fundamentals and Music Appreciation at North Lake College where I am working on expanding the music program. Prior to my arrival, the program offered core level Music Appreciation, Theory/Musicianship, class piano, guitar, and one jazz ensemble. All other ensembles had been defunct for years and the program has little to no rapport with area feeder programs. Recruiting internally using queries generated by Institutional Research, I have started a Symphonic Band despite limited inventory and budget and have started a Steel Band with some instruments I built myself. I designed a brand for the department and created colorful ads for print and social media promoting offerings for the entire department, not just my own classes. I am also working on initiating digital music classes with an initial investment of $5700 of software and controllers that will function in an underutilized PC computer lab.
